high milage/low milage purchase?

Hey guys,

I've been searching the net for a 2011 X6 for the past month and I've narrowed my search to 3 cars. All 3 have the options I want.

Two of the cars have about 25K on the odometer and the dealers are asking about $62K each. The other is outfitted the same but only has 2200 miles on it and they are asking $66K. Low milage car is about a thousand miles away with the other two about 250 miles from me.

All have clean CARFAX reports.

I'm leaning toward the low miles car. What do you think?

Just because they have clean carfax reports does not guarantee there are not any issue. Make sure you can trace the entire chain of ownership, especially on the really low mileage car. I recently learned a fair amount through my own experiences what can happen with really low mileage cars. If the 2200 mile vehicle is at a BMW dealer, you are probably fine, but if it is at a random 3rd party car dealer I would be concerned. Shockingly, there are unscrupulous car dealers out there that will buy cars for significant discounts due to defects, then clean the titles. After they clean the title, they will then sell them for huge profits. I would only buy a car that is 2 years old with 2200 miles if it came directly from a BMW dealer.

Great, now you have me worried.

Kidding. I think Brad makes good points and sounds unfortunately like he has bad experiences in this regard.

However, using myself as another data point, I bought my 2 year old X6 with only 6000 miles or so and (knock on wood) a year later haven't had any unusual problems. There was a low pressure fuel pump replaced under warranty and the HPFP recall done. I've also done a Dinan stage 2 and am now at 22000 miles. I will say that I tried to be careful about the car and took it to an independent mechanic for an inspection before buying. So a deal can be had on a low mileage model, but as with all things, do your due diligence before plunking down your cash.

Good luck!

Thanks Guys,

The low milage car is at a BMW dealership. The salesman tells me the original MRSP was $86300. I'm going to see if I can make a deal.
