Cracked vacuum line on X5M

Anyone had this issue yet?

A crack vacuum line above the turbo chargers. Engine malfunction message, car stalls, had to get it flat-bedded to the dealer.

Seems kind of stupid for BMW to put a brittle vacuum line right above the turbo chargers.

My X5M is only 2 years old with 34,000 miles.

Unrelated, but I am curious to know have anyone removed the engine top cover to help dissipate the heat generated by exhaust from the inner V area?

Had mine replaced around 28.500 miles... according to my SA it is normal for that part to fail around 30k (don't know why the guys at M couldnt catch that in long term testing). My car didn't throw any faults but I noticed it wasn't pulling as hard. After it got replaced along with all my spark plugs at the 30k service it was pulling harder than ever. Guess I'll be replacing it in another ~30k miles if I still have my truck then.

Car is still at the dealer, but once I get it back I will wrap some sort of heat insulation material around the two tubes, just so I don't have to deal with this again. And keep a roll of duct tape in my trunk so that I don't get stranded when this happens again. Luckily this happen in my driveway while I was headed to work.

Sorry I'm not a mechanic but is it the ribbed one or the other? Also is that the replacement or the cracked one?

It is the ribbed one, if you look at the middle of the picture you can see the crack and the oil around the hose.

No doubt they do long term testing, but the one thing it's tough to test accurately is what happens to different materials with just the passage of time (never mind the severe heat that this is exposed to). That being said, if they had no choice but to locate the vacuum line here, they could have taken steps to do a better job of protecting it.

Just had mine done at 38k. Got the reduced driving CEL one time during a rough idle. The car continue to idle rough and off for a couple weeks but with no CEL. When I went in for servicing the issue was supposedly a cracked vacuum line.

We would it be a better option if we replaced all the turbo vacum hoses with silicone hoses? I believe silicone hoses can withstand higher engine temps.

Thoughts?

At the risk of using a non-BMW part, and completely voiding your entire engine warranty? No.

Add to that, proper maintenance of checking for aging rubber is simple, and replacing on an ad-hoc basis, even simpler; than replacing all rubber bits...

Based on the heat I have experienced coming off those turbos, I'd be worried about the paint on my hood.

My mech said the same thing re: the heat...it would likely bubble the paint on the hood.

Just had my car in the dealership for it's first service, 1 year 18,700kms. I noticed the crank case breathers had some oil residue on different parts of the hoses. The dealer replaced all the PCV hoses and part number are as follows.

11-15-7-589-989 vent pipe
11-15-7-589-992 vent pipe
11-15-7-595-188 connecting line
13-71-7-848-152 filtered air duct
13-71-7-848-152 filtered air duct

Hope this helps for those of you searching for parts.

Also I wonder how hard it would be to make a oil catch can for our cars, it would completely eliminate this issue

So, I began to smell a bit of oil burning...
after a short search, I located the source. The connecting tube was leaving residue on the metal bracket that is over the Turbos.

It would seem that removing the engine cover does not help in anyway to eliminate the hose melting problem.

The part number: 11157595188
Is correct, the cost is 28.00 at Getbmwparts. The same part just cost me 44.95 at the local BMW parts Dept.

I would suggest either calling it a maintenance part and replacing in say every 25K. Or have one on hand, so that you don't have to pay inflated prices to keep the tow truck out of your life.
