iDrive screen blank

So my iDrive screen would occasionally not illuminate (backlight) when I started the car. I would do the typical reset and the display would turn on.

This would happen every few weeks. Everything else, radio, Nav, etc. still worked, just could not see the screen unless a light or sunshine was directed at it due to lack of backlighting.

Now about a week ago, backlight stops working and resets don't help.I make an appointment for the dealer. They can't see me for 2-3 weeks.

After a week of driving with no screen it suddenly starts working again.

Will the dealer do anything when I take it in? Or will they give me the typical "cannot reproduce issue" speak.

The car has been plagued with gremlins since I got it three years ago.

Chuck,
I have this (not illuminate) happen about every three/four months, I took to dealer one time but got "not able to reproduce bring it in when it happens again" . I had it happen again but by the time I could take it to dealer, like you it had started working again so didn't bother.

It seems BMW dealers these days can diagnose problems only when they are occurring, have to wonder what good all the electronics is. I have read about this problem regularly so I think there is a defect and BMW just doesn't want to recall to replace the system.

What do you do to reset ?, I usually turn off/start car (sometimes several times) until it comes on.

Compared to Japanese cars BMW is in the dark ages on electronics, my daughter can talk to her Acura and get all kinds of info, I can't even get my X6 to understand a number from my phonebook it uploads to dial it (I miss the system my X5 had where I could enter names and numbers myself).

If you do go to dealer let us know how it goes.

To reset iDrive on the fly press all three of these buttons at the same time for a couple seconds. (Nav DVD will/may eject and then go back in)

IN-DASH DVD EJECT BUTTON
IN-DASH NAV DVD EJECT BUTTON
VOLUME CONTROL KNOB

This is equivalent to a CTRL-ALT-DEL > Restart on a Windows computer.
