Shredded tires after suspension refresh

Gents,

I swapped my tie rods, upper and lower control arms, and thrust rods on the wife's 2008 3.0si and scheduled an alignment for this Wednesday. the problem is that my driver's front tire is shredding like I've never seen after only 40 miles. We measured the rods before swapping but still had to make minor adjustments to the passenger to fix some toe out. Eye balling it all looks well and the car tracks straight with hands off the wheel. Anybody seen carnage like this?

Tires are Pirelli Scorpion Verde A/S with 720AA wear rating and 20k miles on them right now

The new thrust rod ball joint busted.

I went feeling around to make sure nothing came loose and my hand came back covered in grease. When I laid down I saw the grease had sprayed out of the back of the ball joint. It took me 90 minutes to get the ball joint into the socket on that side because of the tight clearance with the axle. I'm guessing it was the mechanic at the shop to "helped" me by using a punch and hammer to get the ball joint in. Just ordered a new one with 2 day shipping so hopefully won't be stuck long.

Anytime your tires scrub or shred like that, 9 out of 10 times, it's toe related. Toe kills tires. Camber under -2.5 deg usually does nothing to a tire compared to 1 deg of toe!

I'm glad you found an easy fix and not something more expensive down the road.

I thought the same thing about the dry rot, but it's only this tire and the others are perfectly fine. Installed in Dec 2014 with less than 20k miles. I was originally thinking maybe a warranty replacement but I doubt they will cover with all the toe damage.

Turns out I was wrong twice...The grease covering the ball joint was from the CV joint leaking out a tiny hole barely noticeable. So wasted money on the new thrust arm and 2 day shipping to Hawaii I ordered a new boot set and going to pickup a new spindle nut today. I've spent 34hrs over 5 days working on this car...so done with it. After some internet research I used "Permatex The Right Stuff" to seal the small hole until I get the new boot and install.

So the shredding was simply the toe. Figured out the measurements and toe was way off. I got it fairly close and finally getting alignment tomorrow.

Only thing keeping me happy is that I finally got my new Vorsteiner diffuser for my M installed!
