The M will run laps around the Macan S. Performance wise you are missing out with the Porsche. Thats enough for me to not want it so I'd consider that. Also 7 years from now I think an x5m would be "cooler" and more special than the Macan S IMO. In conclusion, go for the M!!!

also think this way:
Macan S will have Macan Turbo above, everytime you drive pass a MacanT you won't feel happy seeing it, and probably you wish you spend some more get the top line model.

X5M, the flagship high performance SUV not only unique&stunning in BMW production line, but also stands out among most high performance SUVs (CayenneT/ML63/RRS/RRSS...you name it)
So do yourself a favor buy something you won't regret throughout your ownership

Nice point! I felt that way when I parked next to a Cayenne Turbo last weekend in my X3 35i. Felt like I wanted more. While if I was in a X5M I don't think id want anymore!

x5m has the prestige factor the macan will never have, you could in theory make the macan faster by some means, but it would still be an S.

One would have to pay for $30K worth of repairs over three years to spend the equivalent amount - something possible but highly unlikely. Adding the 7 year warranty to your purchase sounds like a splendid idea to me
This. I've owned old cars, new cars, cars with warranty, cars without warranty, high performance cars with complex and expensive parts, etc, etc, etc. None of my out of warranty german cars were noteworthy with excessive repairs, with the exception of 1....a 1993 Audi 90 CS Quattro. Depreciation is a far worse enemy, and that reinforces your point...it will be experienced whether a new car is leased or purchased. Your devaluation journey in an '11 will be considerably softer than that of the original owner.
My father had a red manual Audi 90 CS Quattro! Loved that car!

Maybe it's just me, but why is this a dilemma???? Nothing compares to an X5M...NOTHING!!! And when it comes to gas mileage and repairs after the warranty, it's like that old saying...if you have to ask then you can't afford it...if you want something with great gas mileage, etc, etc, then buy a Honda Accord or Toyota Prius....Just my two cents...BTW I own a 2009 M5 and a 2011 X5M...isn't life great! I love my x5m!!! eclipse 100mph+ daily on a mountain pass. Then off road it to my cabin in the woods. Snow, mud, ice, see it all! Amazing car.
My other car is an 08 Touareg v10 diesel. Just in case you don't know, every part under the dash has Porsche written on it… more torque than M, (553). Just one of the most amazing touring cars ever made. However not many things in life make you smile like the s63 engine.
M is for smile, my friends.
Cayenne's and Macan's are for cruising...

why dont you look into performance upgrades for it which is much much cheaper than trying to buy an X5M if you like your current X3.'

So coming full circle... Last year I purchased a Macan Turbo. It is an awesome car! But not for me! I had to learn the hard way. Put 10% down, had it for about 11 months. I had serious buyer's remorse. I regretted putting the money down and the sale of our '07 BMW X3. At least I kept our '11 X3! So I learned a pricey lesson! Now I'm updating the '11 with a Dinan Stage 1 and should be good until the X3M comes out live and learn, live and learn!

interesting comments, care to elaborate why? in my view the Macan is the one to go for in that class so what's the issue?

Sure, from my perspective and experience... Overall the car is awesome!!!! I absolutely loved it! But it wasn't for me. Here is my why... The biggest one was my wife hated the Porsche persona. Just hated it. I told her I did not purchase it to impress anyone. I just loved the package of sports car and utility. So that created ongoing tension. Here are the others that I certainly could have lived with but made my switch back to the X3 more practical. Back seat space was tight. Could not fit my parents and daughter back there as comfortable as X3. Even two teenage girls are snug back there on those occasions. I liked the BMW tech better - HUD, backup camera, iDrive system. The BMW service center is also closer, more convenient, loaners, etc. that was something I missed too. Plus the fact that I could tune my current X3 with Dinan stage 1, the new X3M is coming out soon and my wife is supportive of the BMW brand it was a no brainer for me.
