Let The Mods Begin

Hey Everyone,

Haven't posted in a while. That is a great sign when you have nothing much to complain about

The truck has been great, with minor hiccups here and there. However, the overall experience is great. Far greater than my previous car, the horrible 4.8i.

Age is showing for sure and I'll be sending it to a friend's shop soon to get it back in shape (bodywork and interior). The E70's looks are amazing in general; some LED headlights, some new wheels, tires, and probably an airlift suspension on d2 struts are in the plan (sometime around February)

There is one thing I've been contemplating ever since my friend in his GLC63s was a nose ahead; the car definitely needs some mechanical work/upgrades.

I've been watching m539 restorations (our lord and savior Sreten) and I love the work he's been doing on the m3 e92's engine.

The basics are simple; get well-built downpipes, slap a tune and you're good to go. However, I'd like to go a step further and future-proof the engine. I'd like to change the pistons, and camshafts and overhaul the transmission.

just to note, the car isn't going anywhere! I'm keeping it for as long as I can, it's my daily and it has handled the desert heat superbly well. I travel to nearby countries with it, 10 hr + drive (residing in KSA).

The minor, but seemingly expensive, issues, which I could use some advice on are as follows:

1. The car eats up spark plugs like there's no tomorrow. black smoke prone every 6 months. I thought the issue was my injectors, but I've changed almost all of them and the issue just keeps coming back. It could be the burble tune causing the issue; I guess if it gets to it I change the pistons and all (to something of higher grade and quality, the new tune will take care of that).

2. The gear selector does not go back to its position when the car is put to Park. Not sure if this issue can be DIY'd; haven't done my research yet

3. I got hit with a "fuel pump" error when cruising at low speed the other day. Is there a better replacement than BMW original or OEM?

4. Need some new wheels and brake discs; thinking of going for the f85 setup; what's the rating on that?

5. If anyone can advise on the bushings, links, etc. that need to be changed for a better ride quality, I'd love to get some advice before I go on purchasing unnecessary or low-quality items. There's some noise when turning after the car shifts from R to D for some reason.

6. Best transmission overhaul, fluids solenoids, etc.. It's relatively fine but I notice the change between positions (PRND switch) has become a tiny bit slower than I'm used to.

Any other advice on performance + future proofing would be highly appreciated...

The best form of "future proofing" the S63 is:

1) Keeping it stock
2) Using the BEST high-octane fuel
3) Maintaining fuel injector cleanliness
4) Servicing the driveline fluids
5) Removing the rear engine cover during summer months

Not what you wanna hear... but BMW made ALL M cars tough. Just don't get greedy with power. Its already a high-performing SUV. If you really need more - get an M5. I have a bone-stock 2010 E71 X6M and it has 160,000 miles, all original engine and transmission.

Hopefully you have access to a good Indy shop....

Based on your future proofing bit, I'm sure you bought what appears to be a good vehicle......But I'd skip the tune, especially given your location...

Those of us that are now driving 10+ year old vehicles, did the preventative maint...and probably skipped the tuning malarkey....

Your mileage may vary....

Good luck with your vehicle...

I think you meant 77,000 miles...but you are well on your way to the 100K mile mark!

I’m driving it year round still… but haven't been on any long trips for a while…so at this rate, 4000 miles a year - it’s going to take me a while to get to 100K miles…

dumb question, this is the long silver heat shield covers that go over the downpipes and cover the turbos correct?

what are your thoughts on turbo blankets?

i have purchased turbo blankets, 1" and 2" heat shield wrap and plan to wrap my exhaust headers, my downpipes and whatever else I can wrap and just completely remove the heat shields?

honest thoughts? do you think the head wrap and turbo blankets will be sufficient if not better than the stock head shields?

i hear/read that just by removing the stock cats that the heat will go down.......

I also considered the Turbo blankets. However, the labor to wrap them is a PITA. Removing the rear engine cover substantially cools down the S63, as the heat is vented away.

i saw a few other builds where they had individual blankets on each turbo wrapped around. but through PTP i show the 2010-2012 e7x has one larger 'throw' blanket. anyone know what listing/part number is for the individual turbo (form fitted not rolled around).
