Jolt when coming to a quick stop

Hi guys,

On my X6 Activehybrid I've noticed that when I come to a quick stop there's this "jolt", like maybe when its shifting into its lowest gear before stopping.

I can feel it in the steering wheel, the pedal and in the seat.

If I try to slow down gradually then the jolt is less pronounced and sometimes it doesn't happen at all. But usually coming to a stop at a traffic light while travelling at a normal rate of speed produces this jolt almost every time.

This is different from when the ICE engages from hybrid. There is sometimes a shake when the ICE turns on but that is usually upon acceleration from a dead stop.

Is this something that is transmission or transfer case related? Its a 2010 with 70,000KM (not miles). I've never changed the transmission or TC fluids.

The job itself is removing 6 bolt and a new guiibo. But because bmw puts a heat/cover shield over it, you have to drop the exhaust for the shield to come off and that’s just extra labor.
You may jack up the car SAFELY, and go under to take a peak through the opening and confirmed if the rubber is torn.

May want to check driveshaft as well, I believe it is a recall on some E70/E71 model years

I the driveshaft recall but my vehicle is a 2009 build 2010 model so it's not part of the recall. I also checked bmw na and there are no open recalls right now.

I'll have to take it to an indy shop and get an estimate.

Could get a potential goodwill replacement if it is indeed the driveshaft. Since it is fairly common on E7x

Is a good will repair something the dealer would do or would I need to call bmw na and speak with customer service about it?

This could be a lot of different things. Suspension related, driveshaft (guibo/flex disk - same thing by different names), subframe bushings, diff bushing/mount, or trans related though less likely. Some inspection is in order to narrow it down. Ever done any suspension work on this X5? 11 years is a long time for the rubbers even with the low mileage.

Hopefully it's just a guibo as that is the cheapest repair (VERY cheap if you do your own work... ~$105 for both front and rear guibos on our diesel). Yours will likely have the U-joint on the front shaft instead of a guibo so you'd only need to do the rear one at ~$50. But definitely inspect that front shaft. Someone recently posted on XO about a failed front shaft U-joint that sent the shaft through an evap line, into the oil pain, and damaging the engine. Everyone, especially those where they salt the roads, should check their front driveshaft U-joints once a year. Especially if you have any driveline noise.

I will be taking it into a shop to get a diagnosis. I've owned the vehicle since 2013 when it had 22,000KM and now it has 70,000KM. I cant really recall when the issue started. If I try to control my stops, then sometimes the jolt is not very evident and sometimes it doesn't occur at all. But usually when coming to a somewhat quick stop, there will be a big jolt or mechanical clunk that can be felt and heard.

Yesterday I drove in sport mode and the issue did not occur, no jolt at all when coming to a stop.

One other thing I noticed is that when I am almost at a complete stop, usually after the jolt or the moment the jolt typically occurs, I hear this sound, kind of like the last bit of exhaust note on a downshift but at that time the engine is already off and i am in hybrid mode.

I have read about the driveshaft failures which have me concerned, I will be taking it into the shop soon to have them inspect the guibo/driveshaft and test drive the car as well.

Unfortunately, if it doesn't do it when in sport mode or when manually shifting... kinda indicates a trans problem. I have a 2006 X5 4.8is with this same problem and workaround. Probably needs a valve body rebuild, but at the very least new seals in the trans and a fluid/pan service.

Anyway, follow up after your diagnosis. The more data points we can get on issues, the better. Good luck.
