don't use aftermarket oil filters

Just an FYI, after about 5k miles with an aftermarket oil filter my engine (75k miles) started making a really bad mechanical noise at 3500 rpm.

Dealer found out the oil pump sprocket was worn and needed replacement as well as the oil pump and timing chain adjusted. They first replaced everything and still there was a slight mechanical noise and said once they replaced the aftermarket oil filter all the noise went away...

thank goodness i have an extended warranty..

+1 Never use aftermarket oil filters on a BMW unless they are from an OE supplier such as Mahle, Mann etc. Our oil filters are made by Mahle for the M57. You can buy BMW packaged filters from the dealer at a decent price if you have a relationship

I've always used Mann HU816X for the N55. I buy bulk on ebay, like 4 or 10 at a time for even more savings over the BMW branded prices. The price savings using any other oil filter isn't worth the risk.

I can't see how the filter has anything to do with the sprocket and chain.

Something else is up there.

Not sure they had the car for 2 weeks with the shop foreman and even inspectors from the warranty company. But I'm no mechanic either but the sound is all gone.

They did mention the after market filter probably wasn't providing enough flow
