A kit lens at 18-55 doesn't offer too much versatility. I'd suggest getting just the body and picking up something like a 28-105 which is relatively cheap and good for all-around shooting.

And about Nikon... I'm always going to be a Canon fanboy, so Canon > Nikon

Do you really think the 28-105 is wide enough for the Canon DSLR with 1.6x crop? I think you need somthing wider for an around lens.

It's not, but that's whrere a separate fast, wide-angle lens comes in... I have a 24-105 f/4 and 24 isn't wide enough indoors and f/4 is difficult handheld in low light. BUT, the range of 24-105 is great for everyday use.

Is this still a cropped sensor?

For what it is worth, I had the 28-135 IS lens and I can't say that I liked it. Wasn't fast enough for me, so I didn't get the shallow depth of field I was looking for on full zoom and in low light conditions it wasn't wide open enough.

Yes, all "cheap comcumer" Canon DSLR have a 1.6 crop factor.

Apart from the pro 1D that's 1.3 crop and the fullframe 5D and 1Ds.

Would you say an xsi is a good camera to get for a beginner?

Yes, it's the entry DSLR from Canon so yes, it's a beginner camera.

but I love my D80. So far it has been one of the best dslr's I've had, in all honesty though canons are much easier to operate
