Coolant smell after running my X5 5.0i

Afternoon folks,

Noticed coolant missing(level a tad under minimum) as well as a pretty strong coolant odor after driving my 2011 X5 5.0i Today I noticed that the coolant reservoir cap doesn't close all the way even after it makes the click-in noise(about 1mm gap). I am sure the problem is not that easy but I wonder if your similar coolant caps are also like mine? Will provide a few photos as evidence. Besides that... where should I start looking? I mean coolant is not expensive but I need to nap t in the butt.
