Need a new computer?

I want to buy a used E70 X5 4.8, the owner says:

computer fried by a very stupid mechanic, would require re-programming or a new one? car starts, everything works but the communication between the car and the computer is missing. the car will not move, issue between the transmission (which is good) and the computer.

What does it mean? What do I need to replace?

I would say the owner doesn't know what he is talking about. Sound like the information has been passed to him through a chain of people, and each one has distorted it....

Do you own a scanner? If not, don't look at any BMW's that don't run or have a check engine light on.

Yes, I have OBDII and ISTA+. I just finished a exact same car so know quite a little about this car. It's 2 hours away so I try to be well prepared before I go there. Thank you!
