E70 N55 Oil Pan Gasket video

I spent a weekend dropping the front subframe and swapping the oil pan gasket, struts, engine mounts, etc. I haven't done this job before, but I filmed the process in case somebody wants to learn from my mistakes. It's not really a DIY since there's several hours of footage; more of something to reference if you get stuck doing the same job.

Part 1:

Part 2:

Part 3:

And here are the basic steps I took:
  • drain engine oil (18 ft/lb)
  • remove fan then belt
  • remove engine partition
  • setup engine hoist
  • remove reinforcement plate (41 ft/lb, 90 degrees)
  • partly detatch wheel arch covers at rear area
  • unbolt suspension arms from subframe and spindle
  • - control arm to strut holder wishbone (121 ft/lb with car on ground)
  • - control arm to subframe (121 ft/lb with car on ground)
  • - control arm ball joint to spindle (59 ft/lb)
  • - thrust arm ball joint to spindle (59 ft/lb)
  • - thrust arm to subframe bolt (73 ft/lb, 180 degrees with car on ground)
  • replace shocks
  • - unbolt upper wishbone ball joint, pry open, support with tie (41 ft/lb)
  • - carefully unbolt lower strut clamp bolt (60 ft/lb)
  • - remove upper strut mount nuts (21 ft/lb)
  • - move spring to new strut (35 ft/lb)
  • pull driver cv axle from differential (don't break plastic dust shield)
  • pull passenger cv axle from differential
  • disconnect sway bar endlinks from sway bar (73 ft/lb, 41 ft/lb for bracket mounting nuts)
  • mark location, then unbolt steering rack from subframe(41 ft/lb, 90 degrees)
  • unbolt oil cooler from subframe
  • leave
  • - CV axles attached to hub
  • - steering shaft connected to steering rack, but if removed (21 ft/lb)
  • drop subframe (121 ft/lb)
  • replace motor mounts
  • - mount to subframe (M8 21 ft/lb, M10 28 ft/lb)
  • - mount to support arm (M10 41 ft/lb, M12 50 ft/lb)
  • drain front differential (44 ft/lb)
  • disconnect differential breather
  • disconnect front propshaft from transfer case (15 ft/lb, 45 degrees)
  • remove differential (75 ft/lb)
  • remove ps pump
  • - ps pressure line bolt (26 ft/lb)
  • - ps pump mount (30 ft/lb)
  • remove idler pulley (44 ft/lb) then bracket (28 ft/lb)
  • remove passenger axle bearing support (14 ft/lb)
  • remove oil pan bolts
  • - disconnect turbo oil line return
  • - transmission to oil pan 3 bolts (14 ft/lb)
  • - oil pan bolts (71 in/lb then 90 degrees for short, 180 degrees for long)
  • - remove oil level sensor (71 in/lb)
  • replace gaskets, reassemble
  • get alignment, reset steering angle sensor

Hopefully this is useful to someone.

Chris, thank you for posting these videos and torque values, definitely helpful. I finally DIY'd my leaky oil pan gasket on my 2013 X5 N55. I also replaced both motor mounts, the front right axle, all the front suspension components and associated bolts and nuts, rear shocks, springs, sway bar links, rubber pads, and associated bolts and nuts, and yes it was a chore.
