What should a healthy engine sound like?

The other day, someone had posted a Youtube video of their engine making weird noises, which made me curious about what mine sounded like.

Then I realized: I don't actually know what it's SUPPOSED to sound like...

Here's a 30 sec video of what my X5M engine sounds like, warmed up, and in park. A/C is off. Does everything sound normal?

The car drives great and give me no issues: no check engine light, it doesn't eat oil, there's no smoke coming out of the exhaust, the acceleration feels strong, transmission feels buttery smooth, and I get about 16.5 mpg.

That sounds about right. Clicky clacky sewing machine noise. I was researching every x5m engine sound when I first got mine because this doesn’t sound like the other bmw I owned in the past. For some reason the S63 motor is unrefined as far as quietness. My previous 550i with the N63 is like whisper quiet.

That is a relief! All that clicking and clacking did seem odd to me. Thanks

Sounds just like mine. Main thing you're hearing is the fuel injectors.

Last car I had was a Lexus that also had direct injection and it was audible, but nothing compared to the S63.
