2012 X5M Engine Malfunction - Reduced Power

Okay, so a little background info. 85,000 miles, had the oil changed, the 90k maintenance, Dinan stage 1 tuning and a Dinan axle-back installed at Imola Motorsports here in MN about 2-3 weeks ago. I have put 300 miles on it so far.

Today, I had the DSC completely off, with the Power set to Sport and the shifter in S mode, but without using the paddles. I gave her the beans and after accelerating, the engine malfunction message popped up.

I was on my way to Imola Motorsports when it happened to help my brother drop off his S8 for APR tuning. When I arrived, I turned the X5M off and eventually started it up again. The message cleared.

So I asked the guy at Imola about it and he said I could leave it for them to take a look. I told him it cleared and asked it I should drive it around a bit and see if it pops back up.

I ran some errands and it never popped back up. Not even after a hard acceleration in Sport mode with traction off.

My brother picked up his S8 in less than an hour. I told Imola the engine malfunction message did not pop back up so I would just take the X5M home. Well, after running an errand less than 2 miles from Imola, my engine malfunction light popped back up after a hard acceleration in Sport mode with DSC completely off.

The odd thing is, my brother's S8 did not start up after the grocery errand. So, we arranged towing of the S8 back to Imola. Who knows what is going on there after APR tuning.

However, I am not sure what is up with the X5M. I needed to use the X5M to get us back to our homes, but the engine malfunction light did clear after starting it up again. So, the engine malfunction message popped up twice today and cleared twice today and it has never happened before.

I tried like hell to get it to throw the engine light again once I was close to home. I turned DSC off, I put it in Sport, set the power to Sport and floored it on an isolated road. Got almost up to triple digits. No code. Whipped a U-turn and gave her the beans again, no code. So, I went home, let her cool down and shut it off.

Should I be concerned or what should I keep an eye out for? The spark plugs are all brand new, OEM from Bosch. Maybe coil issues? Any other ideas?

Most likely your coils, get the Eldors from FCP Euro. Could also be injectors/boost issues but coils is best place to start.

Thanks a lot, both of you! Imola does great work, so I will bring it to them if the code ever pops up again. I just want to know what I should expect. The biggest problem is they are too busy for me to just stop by when the code pops up and the code resets whenever I turn the vehicle off. So, that complicates things since I do not have a code reader.

Engine Malfunction

+1 to Coils. Had this issue in my 50i this summer. I would punch it, it would hesitate and that message would show up. Turn the car off and back on it goes away.

Replaced a faulty coil and the issue has not returned since.

I had the reduced power message along with shaking at idle and a miss that was quite evident.

I ended up having all plugs and coils replaced. Haven't had an issue since then. I have a 2010 X6 activehybrid with 67,000 kilometres.

vacuum leaks too, like the cross over vent pipe, would give me reduced power too on high loads

I had it scanned. It is a boost leak. That is all I know so far...

2011 BMW X5 35i XDrive Engine Malfunction Reduced Power

Had the same issue. Where this message would pop up and clear itself once the car was restarted. It didn't give any engine codes, or check engine lights. Was definitely thankful for that. Upon investigating, I found out that the Solenoid Vanos could cause this. However, I changed those about 3 months ago and didn't feel as if this was the issue. I changed 2 faulty plugs (NGK Laser Iridium) about 2-3 weeks ago. Was riding fine and the Engine Malfunction reduced power light popped up again. When I remembered that I broke one of my Turbo Vacuum Hose tube pipes in half in the midst of it all. So, I went to my local parts store and purchased a piece of hose that was slightly bigger and coupled the two broken ends together. The truck has ran great for the past two weeks and still does. It's just that message. I ordered a new hose but have been too busy to put in on. I am thinking that this might be the culprit. From what Ive learned and read; that any type of vacuum leak or compromise could cause this as well.
