X5M oil change ?

Someone mentioned that there was a oil change DIY someone posted for the X5M, but for the life of me I can't find it on here.

Anyone have a link?

I have read that link before, this is how I deciphered it.

Since the X5M engine is a S63 (not one of the engine they listed to use the 10W60 oil.)

I assume if I was to change my own oil I can use the alternative approved Mobil 1 0W40. Am I reading it correctly?

MRPCAR for X5M per local dealer in No. California use BMW High Performance SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Oil (BMW part number 07 51 0 017 866)! Check your local dealer. Castrol 10W60 is not recommended for this vehicle. The BMW oil is actually a Castrol product as I understand it.

My dealer told me to bring in my X5M for the 1200mi oil change. Saves me from having to do it myself.

GMONEYLI make sure the dealer inviting you in will cover the cost of the 1200 mile service at NO cost to you. BMW does not have a 1200 mile service for the X5M and will NOT cover the 1200 mile service common as included service in other models.

They told me it's covered. I asked 5 times to make sure. Even told them I heard that it wasn't covered. Maybe it's just something my dealership is doing on their own. Works for me though

Very true. M3 motor requires this service, not X5M

I went to a local dealer and bought an oil filter kit for the X5M yesterday and verified the oil weight with a tech there. Indeed it uses the regular 5W30 weight. So I am going to use the BMW approved Mobil 1 0W40. Mainly because that's what I use in 3 of our other cars, and been very happy with it.

So why not Mobil 1 5W30? Wouldn't that be more suitable? or am I missing something.

I don't really care for Castro oil, Mobil 1 0W40 is the alternative approved oil listed by BMW.

0W40 does offer more protection through a wider operating temperature range. Especially the 0 cold viscosity.

GMoneyLI I how about passing on your experience as to whether the dealer did in fact provide you with a no cost (to you) oil service at 1200 miles. I know I was told to come in for it and then the service guy said "oooppps" you dont need it with the X5M. If you get it for free I am sure a lot of guys would like to know that!
