08 E70 3.0si Oil leak? (pics inside)
Hi all,
I just picked up a used, one-owner 2008 X5 3.0si with 73K on the clock from a local BMW dealer. Before putting it on the lot, the dealer replaced the valve cover gasket, oil filter housing gasket, all coils and plugs, new tires, and 2 wheel bearings. I decided to pull the belly pans off this weekend and have a look from underneath. I've heard of oil pan gasket leaks on the N52 and wanted to see if they overlooked this, or any other issues I could detect with the naked eye. I saw a 2 small drips of oil on the flat bottom of the oil pan, but couldn't quite see where it originated from. I also saw a piece on the back of the engine where it mates with the transmission that was a bit wet. Can you take a look and let me know if this something I should be concerned with? The dealer gave me a 3 month goodwill warranty on any repairs it would need. Thx |

Valve cover and oil filter housing are common leaks. It's on the wrong side to be the oil filter housing though...double check around the valve cover and if nothing then probably the oil pan gasket. Not a fun DIY get the dealer to do it.

Yes. As it turned out, my sealing sleeve in the transmission was leaking fluid, I had a hole in my radiator leaking coolant, and there was leftover oil runoff from the valve cover/oil housing gasket repair. The dealer goodwilled the radiator replacement since I bought it only a month ago and the sealing sleeve was covered by my Zurich warranty.

The warranty is only a basic 3 month/3000 mile used car warranty. Contemplating buying an extended warranty. Both repairs would have cost me about $2500 from the dealer.

At least you had it covered! Good call on the warranty. I'm always sketched out when they propose those warranties. They usually don't cover much and are extremely expensive. I'm pretty handy so I normally prefer spending my time rather than my money. So when they say only $4500 for a two year warranty I just roll the dice and hope it works out cheaper without a warranty.

Honestly BMWs are pretty straight forward when it comes to maintenance and repairs. The only time things get complicated is when you need to run adaptations/special diagnostic tests/coding with a computer with specific hardware. Everything else is just like any other car.
