Steering wheel shaking at 100-120km/h

So recently i have noticed a noticeable shaking with my steering wheel when im driving on the highway at 100-120km/h. Sometimes when i first get on the highway it doesnt shake but when i drive for about 5 mins, the shaking starts. I just got my wheels balanced and aligned, and its still shaking. I do have after market wheels but never any shaking until now. I also got my wheels and tires checked if they were damaged in anyway and they were cleared. So i ask, what could the problem be? Shocks? Transmission? Im getting it in to BMW on monday, but i want to know what some possibilities it could be.

Thanks

go from large in rot mass to small
i.e. Tires > wheels > brake rotor > wheel bearing > half shafts

You should take it to a trustworthy shop for them to check for excessive play in parallel that can uncover potential issues like wheel bearing and suspension bushing/ components

Are you sure your new wheels are hubcentric? The balancing on the wheels should be double checked, and also check your lugs for tightness immediately.

Could also be a bent wheel.

First thing I'd do would be to get a road force balance done.

For whatever reason these cars are super-sensitive and will exhibit steering wheel shake around 70mph if balanced improperly.

Happened with my M3 as well as my X5.

I've had tires installed and "balanced" before, turned around and taken it back after 2 miles down the road. Just because they "balanced" it doesn't mean they did it right.

One more thought, if your setup can be rotated left to right or front to back, try to see if it makes a difference for troubleshooting purpose.

Steering wheel shaking at 120km and above is usually a wheel balance issue.

That's why one should always take your car out on the highway for a run after switching to summer or winter tires.

I actually found some wheel balance weights in my garage floor one time.
And I usually stored my tires in the dealership.

Not sure how thorough they check the tires before they reinstall it.

+1
Happen to me with my M3 when i when to 10&11 inch width on the wheels...
they are tricky to balance. when i hit 70mph the vibration was scary.

RFB is the best way to go.

Sometimes it is not the tires. It could be the actual rim that is not balanced or slightly out of round or bent before the tire goes on. If they use a RFB machine they can spin the rim only to see if the rim is in balance. They can perform a run out test on the rim with the wheel balancer.

Hey i guys, i have update on my car. I got it back from bimmer today and they said everything is fine, and it should be the rim and tire. They wanted to do a road force balance on it, but their machine was down today. So i took it to a indie garage that did the RFB for me. The techs at the garage said that the wheels and tires BARELY needed to be balanced and it was something like a tenth of an oz off. He said it shouldnt of been something that would make my wheel shake. Im not sure what to do now, as i will take my car for a highway run tonight. Couldnt hit 100km in traffic after the balance. I will let you guys know if the shaking is still there. Thanks for your help guys.
