Spare Tire Kit Storage questions
Hey everyone. Love the sharing of information in this group. I was hoping someone here could give me some insights on the Spare Tire Kit.
I suffered a blowout on my X5 with style 214 wheels and non-RFTs. I was planning on replacing the tires anyway (they were on the outs) but this incident has prompted me to seriously consider the spare tire kit option. I know there's space under the floor in the trunk, but I was curious to learn how the kit is mounted to the floor. Previous vehicles I've owned had the spare tires held in place somehow. I don't know if the X5 has this or not. If someone has a picture or 2 they can PM me, I'd really appreciate it.

When I bought my setup, I also ordered the metal plate and bolt that is supposed to hold down the spare. As there was no hole (I have to cut it)in the carpet, I left it alone and just left the spare "loose" in the trunk. But it doesnt move around so I still have yet to bolt it down...

I ordered wheel and tire from TireRack. Jack and lug wrench from Amazon. Wheel well fits perfectly but its lose under the luggage floor cover. No problem It won't move unless the car flips upside down. Then I have more things to worry about . LOL

I'm preparing to switch to non-RFT so I went ahead and bought the rim from FCP Euro and the tire from tire rack.
It was definitely a cheaper route than getting from anywhere else. |

One problem I am having.....finding the valve stem. Napa, auto zone and tire kingdom does not carry it. Anyone have an idea on who would carry it for me to have it installed?

So I went to Pep Boy today and since they couldn't mount the tire, they gave me the valve stem for free. I went back to Tire Kingdom and had it mounted for $36. Now it's in the x5 and let the search for new tires begin!

Make sure you get the neutral lockout tool (which seems to be missing from your toolbox). I was once without one stranded in water and couldn't get the x5 into neutral to tow it out. It isn't a good place to be. Tool #1 here which is: 24507590395 and costs about $8... https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...82#24507590395 The jack from the e53 is the same as the e70 and is easier to find used (ebay, etc). Without a jack the tire doesn't help much. I would also suggest getting a wheel chuck so the rig can't fall off the jack. The foam tire insert is something like $40-50 new from BMW to hold it all IIRC. https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=71_0423 foam insert: 71106775773 On a selfish note now you also need one of my cargo cover lift strut kits to hold that rear cover up! -Rich

Yeah, I would 2nd Rich's comment about getting his lift strut. Works great if you haven't done it.

When i went up to larger tires I bought a tire/rim from an infiniti qx70 on ebay(because new compacts in that size were insanely priced). I bought a new BMW wheel and handed both to discount tire when I was having another flat fixed and they did it for $10. For all I know he did it off the books though because he was amused that I was putting AT tires on the X5. I was fully expecting to have to take it to the llantera shop but that discount tire was fine with it. It is very important that the tire diameters match on an Xdrive vehicles to avoid wearing out the clutches (even for a spare). -Rich

I thought so too. They said it required a special machine to mount it. I said okay and went down the street to Tire Kingdom.

Spare Tire Recommendation for 2017 X1
I just purchased a 2017 X1 and decided to get non- run flat snow tires/wheels. Can someone recommend the best place to get a spare/ & jack that will fit in the cargo space? thank you!

Bimmerzone has the kit, it's not cheap but worth peace of mind. Might be able to snag a kit off eBay. I got lucky and found a member here selling one.
I also bought an OEM air compressor as well that has an emergency fixaflat if necessary as well.

My rig came with a factory spare, yet the bolt that is supposed to go through the little plate and hold it down is not long enough.... So it just sits there. I have never seen any indication that it moves, and my torque wrench sits in there better with it slightly to the side anyways.
Reminder to everyone, check the air pressure in your spares occasionally, I had to use mine a few weeks ago, and it was at 20 psi, which kept it off the ground, but not safely as they are meant to be around 60. |

I have a 2021 X5M competition. Somehow, the mobility kit was ordered and that deletes the space saver spare. The Dealer ordered all spare tire kit items at their cost. The only thing missing is the bracket and wing screw to hold the tire down. I haven't cut the carpet to see if there is a hole for the screw or removed the carpet to check. Does it have a a hole with threads for the screw? I read several posts relating this situation. Bracket # 71151180625? Wing Screw #07119905872 / 07119907016? I found these numbers online - don't know if they are right. I appreciate any input. PS: I love my BMW. Changed from many years of MB AMG's Thanks, Ed Forman

I PULLED UP THE CARPET PIECE - GREAT NEWS. THE HOLE WITH THREADS IS UNDER THE CARPET. ALL I NEED TO DO IS TO CUT A CIRCLE OUT OF THE CARPET. I knew it would not make sense for BMW to build the mobility kit or space saver tire options differently. Now, I will order the wing screw and plate. |

When I switched away from run-flat to normal tires I looked into a space saver for my 2010 X5. No luck with a few junk yards. Also what size should I be looking for? Any suggestions for where to buy and size would be helpful. Are there other mfgrs who's space saver would work with my vehicle?

There is almost always an e70 spare tire on ebay. New rims are also available from bmw parts suppliers as is the foam jack/wrench holder. For some reason compact spare tires arent always cheap from places like tire rack. The e53 jack and jack handle is the same and usually cheaper and easier to find.
The spare setup will probably end up costing 300 to piece together for the e70. -Rich |
