In the US, we'll spend $20 to recycle $5 worth of coke cans because it makes us feel good that we did something to save the world. It doesn't matter if it really works or not, or how much damage our "solution" does to the environment, such as having to use more raw materials to build more factories to make hybrid parts, and the factories use more land, that use more electricity, and generate toxic waste/heavy metals, etc. Besides, what good does it do to make a car with a smaller engine more efficient!

Following that logic, pick the beefiest, heaviest gas guzzler (i.e., Suburbans, Tahoes, X6, etc.) and make 'em even heavier by turning them into hybrids, advertise the former guzzler is now efficiently dynamic and people feel better about slapping their money down to buy the gas guzzler. It makes people feel better about BMW, knowing that somewhere, somebody is doing something in this big, mean world to save the whales and the polar bears.

Don't get me wrong, I love gas guzzlers, I just don't like being hypocritical about it. Hey, can you step on it - I'm late!

I totally agree...this hybrid model is more about image than reality.

That is my thought. More damage is done creating the batteries.

Also, if you going to pay $80k for a car, I don't think MPG matters that much. If you were about saving money, you would be driving a $20k car.

You don't spend $60k more to save 5MPG. The payoff is like 40 years.

I was talking to the dealer in NY about this and he said they all can't figure out why it's priced so high (aside from being more expensive to produce, noone will buy this car for $100K fully loaded).

I think is it more about marketing. Like Lexus, they can't move the Hybrid LS for $120k.

every X6 that comes on the lot at my local BMW dealer in Palm Beach FL is sold very quickly, inlcuding 3 X6 Hyribds. Numerous X6 35i and 50i sell extremely quickly and every M does too.

interesting, I was told there is virtually no interest in them in NY. is there a way to see x6 sales by engine type by month?

This is as close that I've seen on sales figures, but I don't think it break it down the same as you requested by engine type. FWIW

Thanks. Glad to see that x6 is outselling x3. On the other hand, would like to see as few x6 on the road as possible
