tailgate lights

Hi Guys,
Im just wondering what the lights on the X6 tailgate are for? I mean, the rear outside lights are the brake lights but the ones that are attached onto the tailgate - what are they for? I was swapping the rear brake bulbs for LEDs and came across the bulbs in the actual tailgate itseld and for the life of me cannot get them to turn on! Definately not the Fog lights nor the brake lights so im stumped! Any geniuses able to shed some light?

I believe they only turn on during hard stops. I've read posts that you can get it coded so it will all turn on with normal brake pressures.
