Used Tires With Different Wear Question
I was finally able to find an inexpensive used pair of winter tires (for the staggered rear) which fit my specifications. The problem is, one tire has 60% of tread remaining, the other has 80%. The price is right, but are there any real concerns having tires on each side with different amounts of tread remaining? Might there be a substantial wear difference on components, such as differential, etc.? During each winter season, I put on appx. 2k miles, if that. Also, could I put a different model tire (same brand) on the rear, such as Pirelli Sottozeros, with Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow on the front, or is it advisable to keep the same model at all four corners?

You can have a tireshop verify them if they are still worth using. You won't notice much of a difference although long term use will cause extra wear on the diff as one rotates slighlty faster than the other. But its not like a whole tire size off so ii tt may not matter.
I've had many bad experiences with used tires. However you want to have a tire shop check them out before you buy |

I agree with PAX5. Not something I would do if it were up to me. I know it may be a small difference but a difference just as well, which might contribute to an issue with the differential or transfer case. Either way, to have an issue with either one and having to have them repaired would cost more than a set of tires.
Just my $0.02. |

That sounds reasonable. Thanks for the additional advice. I'll stick with my stretched 275s on the staggered rears. Although slightly out of spec, my issue with them is primarily cosmetic.

Is that how you bought the car? Show some pics. Not all tire brands can be "stretched" on an 11 inch rim! On one of my many sets of wheels I have 275/45-20 Michelin Latitude HP "stretched" on staggered BMW style 87 (9.5 wide front, 10.5 wide rear). But Michelin "allows" that with this particular tire model ...

I bought a lightly used staggered set with replica 214s for a winter setup. They have Scorpion 275s all around. They worked very well last winter.

If not, find another 20" wheel that is 10" or 10.5" wide, non staggered and swap the tires. Many of the e53 wheels work great for the winter. You just have to bore out the center bore from 72.56mm to 74.1mm.

According to Tire Rack specs, the Scorpion Ice & Snow 275/40/20 tire has a rim width range of 9-11", so I should be OK there. However, that raises another question: My stock rear tire is 315/35/20. Am I OK with an Aspect Ratio of 40 for the winter tire?

There will be no ratio difference, just wheel width, which does not influence rotation.

Thanks. Yeah. All four are 275/40/20. I calculated the stock rear standing height as 28.68 vs. the winter rear as 28.66.
315/35/20 275/40/20 Difference Diameter: 28.68 (728.5) 28.66 (728) -0.02 (-0.5) -0.1% Width: 12.4 (315) 10.83 (275) -1.57 (-40) -12.7% Circum. 90.1 (2288.65) 90.04 (2287.08) -0.06 (-1.57) -0.1% Sidewall 4.34 (110.25) 4.33 (110) -0.01 (-0.25) -0.2% Revs/Mi 703.18 (436.94) 703.67 (437.24) 0.48 (0.3) 0.1% So, hopefully, no additional wear on any components. It doesn't matter what the stock is, because those wheels aren't on the car!
As long as what you have on there is the same, front to rear, you're good.

Thanks. I was just comparing what the setup is from the factory to my winter modification to determine if there may be adverse wear on the diff, transfer case, etc. Much appreciated!
