Thinking about X5M...bad time to buy pricewise?

So I have an E90 335i, 2008. I needed an SUV/SAV so recently I was looking at a 2011 X5M with about 52k miles, listed at $49k. It is pretty much fully equipped, mint.

Here's my concern: Obviously it's a more expensive car than the 335i, not to mention the gas - but what concerns me most is the depreciation.

It's already taken a big down turn price wise, and now at 52k miles, it's out of warranty. (Not CPO)

With the new X5 coming out later this year - are the current X5M's likely to tumble even further by the end of the year? I can't imagine with gas prices so high and the new X5 coming out that these would not take a hit - they already seem to be very niche vehicles that only a select group of people have interest in enough to buy them.

Summary: Buy now or wait for bigger depreciation?

(I don't have a "need" for an SUV right now, so I can wait a little..I just have more of a "want" for the X5M..)

Sold my 550i tues. can't part with my n55 e90. Drove x5m on Friday had 2k miles left on warranty excellent shape every option but vented seat.
Drive it and I wasn't impressed. Wife pointed out if I want an m car just get the 2015. Daily driving the x5m didn't make sense sitting in traffic not even gas, those bbk are expensive to maintain.
I drove a diesel instead it was base like most available on market. Engine seemed to accelerate nicely around town. Stock 335 like.

Ended up buying a loaded diesel, oyster int. bought out someone's lease who special ordered the car. Good mix of sport, utility, space, weekend towing (no need yet), easy baby seat loading, and everyday use. Low tco. Still going to mod it

What didn't you like about the X5M? I'm thinking about one as well.

I test drove one 2 weeks ago and was thinking about waiting until fall when the new model comes out as the prices should drop by then. BMW dealers up here are asking in the $70's for 2010s right now. Good luck with that.

The X5M makes no practical sense to own, but it's a blast to drive. I drove it really hard and it's performance is damned impressive for big truck. Good luck.

I bought a pre-owned X5M 2010 full options 2 months ago from a private seller

I have previously owned ML63 but X5M is a totally different beast..very car like handling and very very fast!

I have changed several cars during the last 3 years (E60 530i, E60 M5, ML63 AMG, F10 535I) but I guess I'll keep this beast longer..my warranty and service package will expire soon but I plan to renew it till end of 2015..

Yeah I'm not sure you guys know what your missing. I've had the X5 diesel and the second I drove the x5m I was in love, traded the diesel in in less than 12 months. I even had a tune on it but still drove like a minivan compared the x5m

I use my x5m as a daily driver, grocery getter, kid hauler. I use one of my other cars are a weekend fun car.

I don't think would every go backwards as performance. I thought about stepping into a cayenne turbo, gl63 or rs7 but I love my x5m way too much.

As far as maintenance goes I'm not sure it's much different than any other x5. Maybe a little more. Brakes maybe?

I just bought an M and like everything else I am sure price will continue to drop but I doubt it will be rapidly. I have heard with the poor reception the new X5 has received and the next M not due out right away and due to E70 be coming more affordable the current Ms were expected to maintain their desirablity if that's even a word.

I also own a diesel with a tune and it's fun to drive but it's no ///M.

i bought an X5M CPO two weeks back. there is nothing on the market like it. it does everything...and well. its the answer to i want SUV practicality and supreme performance. only issue is gas mileage but if you are looking at this car you aren't that concerned about MPG.

I pulled the trigger as i don't think they styling of new X5 is compelling. looks less sporty than current line, more lumbering and likely to compete with land rover than porsche. looks like a bloated X3 and the X3 is the least exciting car in BMW's line up.

M-version shouldn't be out until 2015 anyway so its a ways off and i can't imagine you'll get much better performance other than some MPG improvement from more gears, bit less weight and auto/stop/start, etc. but you will be looking at well over 100K optioned up for it when it arrives. Spend 50-60K now and drive happy.

While the interior is an obvious improvement, making the exterior looking like X3's bigger twin is a mistake.

However, I am sure it will still sell like hot cakes.

Buy what you want. I learned a long time ago to not buy a vehicle or options based on what I or someone thinks might be a better resale price later. You're talking about spending 50k for a used vehicle. It's used, so most of the depreciation has already happened. The difference between a good amount of deprec. and a bad amount of deprec. that you are concerned with amounts to what, a couple thousand dollars one way or the other 2 or 3 or 4 years from now? This isn't an investment. If you are worried about a couple thousand dollars over the course of several years, then don't spend 50k on a used vehicle in the first place. My advice is buy what you want, enjoy it, and no regrets.

I dont think there's ever a bad time to buy a car unless you are not financially ready. Like what MysticBlue said, if you like it go out and get it. Theres always going to be something better down the road and the next X5m isn't going to come out by 2015. By then your thoughts maybe towards another vehicle anyway. I still have my X5M and still loving it. I daily drive it along with my E46M3 and it is still a blast to drive. Power delivery doesn't impress as much as it use to since I have the F10 but the handling aspect does. This thing takes turns that an SUV shouldn't. Gas mileage isn't the best but it is not bad. We are talking about a TT VV8 5000 lb vehilce and today I am averaging about 15.8 mpg. Not to shabby considering the way I drive.

exact same mpg that i get on avg with 25% city and 75% hwy driving.
