The M/S is manual vs sport related to shift mode, S lets it rev higher but it's still in auto mode, M (manual) lets you tell it when to shift (though it will shift for you if you anyway if you go too high with the RPM's).
The sport button is separate and if I recall, only is present on cars with the sport package and the adaptive suspension that comes with it. Putting on the sport button stiffens the suspension. |

Would you prefer one with or witout the sport mode button? I was choosing between two 4.8's and one didn't have sunroof or navi with Sport and the other has Navi and a Pano roof but no Sport.. I'm torn between the two but the obvious choice would be the one with no sport which is the one im going with

There's a awful lot of electronics behind the button ....
http://www.bmw.com/com/en/insights/t...ive_drive.html It was a expensive option. Well worth getting. "To meet this growing demand, BMW teamed up with other companies to develop a new bus system that provides the safety, speed and robust quality demanded in automotive applications. The 2007 BMW X5 is the first standard-production vehicle in the world to use this leading-edge technology. Flex Ray controls the optical bus system of the Adaptive Drive chassis control system, and is used in controlling the stabilisers and electromagnetic valves of the dampers; this enables Adaptive Drive to eliminate the effect of body roll on the vehicle." |

Sport. Why buy the big engine then choose a sunroof over the better suspension.... It not only improves handling, but actually improves ride quality as well. Pretty amazing really, to be softer over bumps but stiffer in turns.

The adaptive/active suspension is a MUST have with the 4.8 if you truely want the BMW experience. I'd walk away from an X5 with out sport, nav and pano sunroof and find one that has all those options. Keep looking until you find that combo. You might not notice the difference right away from a short test drive but trust me there's a huge difference.
