Weird electrical gremlin
I used the remote to unlock the X5 this evening. The locks popped and the alarm beeped, but the lights didn't flash. Then a good 3 seconds later they started flashing like the I had hit the warning flasher button. I could not get them to stop. I got in, started it up, and they were still flashing. The actual warning flasher button did nothing and was not flashing. I killed the engine and got out, then locked and unlocked the doors with the remote. The lights continued to flash on and off. I finally locked the doors using the key and the flashing stopped. I was then able to unlock using the key and everything was fine.
Just a weird electrical gremlin or a sign of something more serious?

According to the owner's manual, the alarm indicator under the mirror flashes continuously if the alarm has been tripped. In my case it was the warning flashers on the corners of the car. Just like having the flashers on.

If it happens again, I'd call the dealer. If it never happens again, I'd still ask about it for my own knowledge... most likely it's just a BMW brain fart in the electronics.
