NYC long island 20\" 214 all seasons or snow
I've been reading the forum regarding just this issue but still don't have an answer. I would like to keep the same wheels on for several reasons storage looks, and if you swap 19 x 9 you have to deal with the whole wheel arch thing . Like I mentioned I live in queens and I think if I have too I will swap out for conti dws and keep the same wheels. I know that these are not runflats. I think that snow tire option for the metro area is a little overkill. Most of the posts I've read are from wheel further north and west. Would live any feedback from people in and around my area. Thanx

I'm in the same situation, I would like to keep the 20" wheels on my 2011 X5 SAV. But I rather go with the all season than snow tires. I'm in the NYC area and my X5 is staying inside today since we got the blizzard coming today and I still got the performance tires on my car.

Its funny because we got our cars from the same dealer, wondering who your ca was. Because I had it ordered with the sport 19, but instead got the 20's . I feel like 9 months out of the year they are a blessing but right now not so great. I love the looks so much better, but the whole reason I wanted the 19' s was just for this kinda of weather. I think all seasons are the way to go now just have to figure out which is best . Not sure between runflats or not.

Good luck with the snow storm - I hear that you may get 12-18 inches of the white stuff. Snow tires or not, that is a good time to leave the car parked.

In the beginning I couldn't decide on the 19" or 20" wheels, but after much debating I decided on the 19" wheels. But then I noticed my CA at Rallye made a mistake and ordered the 20" wheels. Yes, I know it looks a lot better, but with the weather we got today, I can't drive at all with my performance tires.

I'm in the same boat. I have the 20"s Msport. I think I could do OK if I absolutely had to go somewhere, but I'd rather just not take the chance. I'm in LI too.

I totally agree about leaving the car parked that's what I'm doing right now, but at the same time with the proper tires it wouldn't be an issue. Did you get the rim and tire protection. Still confused it's like I have a great suv but I can't or rather shouldn't drive in this kind of weather. Maybe an all season runflat would be ideal in the 20 size but I bet they are super expensive.

Yeah me too, I had it with my 335 xi and had 8 tires replaced in the course of 3 years. But if you get all seasons where does that leave you as far as the insurance. By the way just went out about an hour ago for a quick ride in the snow no problems but took it really easy. Thrilling and nerve wrecking at the same time. Back home and happy everything was ok the scariest part was backing into my sloped "tight" driveway. Maybe winter tires for three months isn't a bad idea.

That's great news thanks. Now if I can only decide with which tires to go with, snows for three months and summer tires for the rest of the year, or all seasons year round confused. But after driving tonight snows don't seem like a bad idea then again it's supposed to be 50 degrees this weekend what the hell.

I have and X5d with snows currently mounted on th 18's. I'd be interested in buying somebody's 19's for the summer if anybody is selling.
Also...would I have to deal with the "Wheel Arch" thing? |

I believe that the extended wheel arches only come on cars equipped with 20" rims from the factory. The only time you would change them is if you choose to run 20" rims otherwise you should be ok.

Pirelli scorpion ice and snow as well as a couple others, with the pirelli's you have a choice of runflat or not. Visit tire rack website enter your tire size and a couple of options should pop up. Good luck I might have to do the same. The runflats are probably a better option but they are more expensive.

I went square on the stock 20" wheels with 275/40R-20 Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V1 XL.
We have had 7" of snow this weekend and the truck ran great in snow and ice. You do not want wide tires, the narrower the better. Dedicated snows are the best and no all season will match them for safety and peace of mind....Steve

My friend just told me, he drove his new 2011 X5 M Sport in the massive blizzard in NYC area without any trouble. Yes, he got 20" wheels on his X5 with the performance tires.

I was interested in getting either Continental DWS or Toyo Proxes STII. Toyo's arent run flats but I have a spare tire anyway. Conti's are SOLD OUT and are on National back order.
I live in LI, NY and dont really want to commit to a snow tire set up. I just want a tire that I can use when snow drops. Lets face it, if it snows a lot, I really wont be driving much. Last edited by slalomfever; 01-05-2011 at 02:43 PM.. |

just picked up a set of non-run flat Toyo Proxes STII. What a difference from the Dunlop tires that came with the car. The ride quality was a bit softer (in the cold weather) and there was little to no road noise.
We are suppose to get around 6 inches of snow tomorrow. I will keep you posted |
