2012 5.0 with Active Autoworks DP and tune -help reduce popping/cracking exhaust note

2012 X5 V8
Active Autoworks Catless Downpipes
Their ECU flashed tune
Stock mufflers

Exhaust note is harsh, lots of crackling, popping.. sounds like metal hitting metal if that makes any sense. Almost the opposite of a deep drone you might get on the highway at low gear.

Looking for a deeper, more refined/composed Muffled growl.

The volume isn't really the issue, it's the tone of the exhaust.

I was thinking about adding some sort of resonator within the system to help reduce this sound. Any suggestions or thoughts?

Are you referring to the popping and crackling when you let off the gas? I added 200 cell race cats from mil.spec and it drastically reduced the crackling but did not eliminate.

No, not exhaust burble.

This is the tone of the exhaust during full throttle. Popping might be a bad word to describe this...(car is not backfiring).

I'll try to get a video tomorrow.

Might add a pair of flowmaster dBX series laminar mufflers and see if that helps.

whoa...totally not getting a cracking and popping while on the gas...is it a raspy note like E46 M3 or F80 M3?

You could cut out the stock resonators and throw in those mufflers.

Spoke to Active Autoworks yesterday.

They immediately knew what i was talking about. They said that combo on the N63 all sound like that. Some have messed around with axle back portion....

At this point, i'm over it. Prob going to go back to stock DP since i'm replacing the engine in a couple weeks...

Just got the class-action lawsuit papers today.

Settlement includes about 84,000 current and former owners and lessees of 2009-2014 BMW 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, X5 and X6 vehicles equipped with N63 engines.

Avoid the N63 at all costs. If your X5 isn't burning oil yet, sell it asap.

Well I already have one and it already burns oil. I think the class action lawsuit is a joke.

Have you read the details on engine replacement? I'm at 90k miles. It's cheaper to fix the engine then pay 40% BMW's cost to have them do it.

What do you think?

Seems as though the only winners are the 8 plaintiffs suing BMW for $3500 each.

Yes I'm very familiar with the situation. I was aware that the lawsuit was coming in summer of 17.

I followed the case like a hawk, called the lawyers, saw the preliminary solution when it was released on May 5th.

Repairing or replacing the engine depends how fucked up it is, in both cases, they have to remove the engine from the car. That being said, the N63 engine block dropped from 9K to 3K in December and it continues to drop. I decided to just get the new engine since it was a wash between repairing and replacing.

In Regards to repair costs.... You need to be good at negotiating, have a long-standing relationship with the Head Service Manager, and buy a lot of cars from that dealer over 20 years.

Regardless, I was quoted $15,000 for complete engine replacement.

My SA went to war with BMW NA.... and through some prolonged negotiating all 3 parties came to an agreement.

BMW contributed $6,000 towards the repair
My Dealership gave me a $4,500 credit toward my next BMW car-purchase.

So I paid $9,000 once the car was complete.

Since I had about 85,000 miles on the car, BMW NA will contribute 55% on the paid repair cost of $9K.

Add all this shit up and if you factor in the $1,000 voucher and $4,500 Credit towards my next BMW, I will come out +$1000.

New engine comes with a 2 year warranty - unlimited miles.

Now I just need to decided what BMW to purchase next.

I would argue BWM NA and the lawyers won this battle.

That's exactly how my 50i with downpipes sounded. Strangely, when I put the same downpipes on my X5M, it sounds nothing like what the 50i did. I kind of miss it, sounds more raw.

Did you leave as is? Or experiment with anything?

Agree it's raw as hell. It sounds like it has long tube headers

I put a Meisterschaft exhaust on it, which made it even louder! I am thinking about doing the OEM exhaust mod on the M by straight piping the valved section to see if it sounds like it used to. I'll post a video of my 50i with DP and exhaust

I've spent about 70 hours researching this, calling many many exhaust manufactures.

I believe I have a solid plan.

Going to purchase 2 of these.

https://vibrantperformance.com/catal...47debc9397c3ee

https://www.amazon.com/Vibrant-1142-...2717918&sr=8-7

There is a 20 inch section of 3 inch diameter exhaust roughly right under the back seat that runs perfectly straight. Each resonator is about 10 inches long. Because of their size, I will stagger them.

Ordering parts today. I'll let you know how it turns out. I have a pretty good feeling this will work.
