Carbon Build Up?

So my engine light came on. Brought it into the shop.

They've had my car for more than a week. They think it's carbon build up they're doing a check on it right now.

To remove it do I need them to do it or can I do it myself?

I read somewhere I just have to drive it for a longer period of time at a certain RPM?

THanks
