Exclamation Recall: Front driveshaft

I picked up my X5 from the dealer yesterday, and along with the service I originally brought it in for they said they checked and replaced my front driveshaft as it was part of a recall.

It looks like it applies to all 2010 build X5s (and possibly others). I do think it's a relatively new recall as they didn't mention anything the last time they had it in April.

I found this after the fact, and it looks like it may be a pretty big deal.
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=733249

Just a friendly heads up.

My 4.10 build 2011 X5M is at the dealer today. They advised me of the recall, and that they will be inspecting, not necessarily, replacing, my front drive shafts. Not sure what they are looking for or what triggers the replacement.

I personally didn't get a note from BMW - it was only when the dealer had it that they mentioned there was a recall.

Took mine in for the brake flush and the SA informed me that the drive shaft and bolts were checked and no replacement was necessary.

Just Wednesday 10th July, my front drive shaft decided to gave while driving. I have noticed "gur ger gur" sound coming from below while driving slowly, decided to park by the side and did a check, engine running smoothly without any funny noise. So, I confirmed it might be the shaft below but never have any least idea that it will eventually broke. My past experienced on drive shaft was very much the coupling wore off and replacing it is not serious.

But this time, its ridiculous that the shaft actually broke. "Continue from top," I drove to a near by regular car workshop (whom I knew) but not a BMW specialist, to my horror (don't know fortunate or unfortunate) before reaching the workshop which is 30m away, my speed was about 10+mph and a sudden "ping pong bing bung......", as if like someone is whacking the car with a metal rod. People standing by the sides were all staring at this X6, their expression were ??????? what the F##k happen to this BMW.

Anyway, immediately called up to check on spare part and left with USD1,000 poorer the next day.

BMW Part# 26207597649 (broken drive shaft)
BMW Part# 26208605866 (new drive shaft)

not sure how many miles you have but generally seems like it happens at 50K...mine happened at 49,800 miles.

On a road trip last month I had noticed a vibration/shudder on the passenger side under acceleration and have just added to my list of things for warranty repairs; I wonder if this is what is causing it. Does anyone happen to know the years ranging in the recall? What symptoms/signs has anyone else notices?

Driving on the freeway today and BOOM! sounded like a ran over a large piece of wood that bounced off the bottom of the vehicle. I had the X5 in for the front drive shaft recall 5 months ago and they checked it and said it was fine. Yeh right! I had it towed to the dealership tonight and i will let you all know what the outcome is. Build date 7/10 with 37k miles.

How much did the injector replacement cost of you don't mind me asking? I am concerned that my X will need to have this done.

Covered under 'good faith', I was just out of warranty and my dealer handled every last penny.

Mine's at the dealer this week (I'm out of town on business), for a few minor things. I just sent my SA a note to have it checked again. Will update everyone with the findings.

Neewbie from Zurich

I just joined as i purchased an X5 xDrive 30d 2010 - I saw on another forum something about the Drive shafts... Before I purchased the car - I phoned BMW Importer here and they verified that the car had been checked for this issue and nothing was found wrong... So I hope that it remains that way as it does NOT sound like a good thing on the motorway to break at speed...

- Hello to all and I will add some photos soon... It's raining here and damm windy due to the left overs from Hurrican Gonzalo...

Until soon... Oh am I'm seeking an Upgrade to the Sat Nav. is Baccus is around?

Cheers
Ben

You should be able to call your local BMW dealer, give them the VIN and make certain that it was indeed done.

SA adviser called me today and said that both front drive shafts will be replaced and the Vanos bolts while it is there. Should have it Thurs evening. I will have him get pictures of the broken shaft. BMW should just replace these instead of just inspecting. I had no noise, vibration or anything that would make me think that there was something wrong, that's the scary part.
