My 2012 X5M caught fire at 120,000 km. it started in the engine compartment on the driver's side close to the dash. Don't know what caused it

Holycrap! Was it in your garage? I hope no one got hurt or any property was damaged.

Recently changed my fluids at 85k miles (all were pretty dirty);
-Transmission fluid (filter, gasket ATF fluid, pan bolts)
-Transfer case fluid
-Front diff fluid
-Rear diff fluid - we have a 3 piece differential; (rear diff gear oil + final drive gear oil)
-Engine Oil - LiquiMoly 5w-30

I also accomplished some other things while it was in the shop... Installed wireless phone charger in console, reconnected vacuum actuator for exhaust flaps (I have been chasing this issue since I bought it )
The actuator unit was completely bypassed, causing flaps to stay open all the time - I know some of you want to have them open all the time, but not me; I like having the ability to control them when I want!

Total cost $1887.00

Crazy, coincidentally did all the fluids you mentioned and brake flush too last night. I’m at 72k. All the fluids were clean and so were the magnets, which is great to know! Nothing like piece of mind! Not changing the fluids in these more often than BMW recommends is the worst thing someone could do! Never, over 10k on a oil change or 60k-70k on transmission... Now, I’m going to every 5k on oil changes, being over 700horsies lol

I’d recommend updated ignition coils around 60k and plugs... I did break a rear axle, but that’s not common.

I have a 2013 X5 M which is just about to turn 80K miles. I'm the 2nd owner. Purchased it with 27K miles in April 2015. It is at the dealer now for the passenger side airbag recall. No major issues yet...

2013 X5M at the dealer for passenger air bag recall?
When I was in the service last week for driver's side air bag recall I was told (and I checked myself online) that there is no passenger air bag recall for 2013 X5M? maybe its related to the VIN number

Hello , are the transmission and differential fluid supposed to be changed ? I’ve talked to a couple mechanics locally and at the dealer and they would NOT change those fluid even if I paid them because they were supposed to be “lifetime”. Anyone else wanna comment please ? Thanks in advance

Nothing is infinite!

Fluid breaks down with heat and such, trans and gears are no different than engine oil and do have life cycles!

Beware of the 2010 driveshaft replacement under recall date. Plenty of 2010 X5Ms not covered in the first six months of builds. It was the first thing that broke on me.

Next up vacuum and coolant lines.

Then firewall plastics right above the motor began melting.

Then comfort access handles started dragging down the battery and blew a fuse causing the audio system to cease functioning until resolved.

Then passenger door inner handle plastic turned to goo.

All of these things are common to the platform. The only time you realize this is when you begin digging for symptoms and see that 10-15 people had the issue and posted about their fixes.

I'm not sure if its related to VIN number. The production date of my 2013 is 5/17/12. I ran a Carfax on mine and it said: At least 1 manufacturer recall requires service.

In the Carfax detailed history:

1/9/18 - BMW of North America, LLC.

Manufacturer Safety Recall Issued NHTSA #18V-030. Recall # 18V-030-275.
PASSENGER'S FRONT AIR BAG
Status: Remedy Available.

I emailed my service advisor on 3/2/18 asking if there were any open recalls and he replied yes, passenger side airbag. Then scheduled an appointment to have it replaced. Was told they have to remove the dash to replace the passenger side airbag.

Thanks for replying, I checked BMWUSA site (place to check for outstanding recalls by your car's VIN) and it came out as:
There are no open recalls for your vehicle.

Last time I checked was about a month ago and it was showing only driver's side air bag which I took care off.

So I'm not completely sure, btw the manufacturing date of my '13 is actually April 2012 (I can't recall exact date)

No, it was just impressive. Plus the list of things done over that course of miles. Honestly, impressive, and stupidly clean from the outside. Heck the LED conversion the car has is 1/4 the asking price lol.

You're welcome. I did some more research and found this summary below:

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2007-2013 X5 xDrive30i, X5 xDrive35i, X5 xDrive48i, X5 xDrive50i, X5 M, 2009-2010 X5 xDrive35d vehicles and 2009-2013 X6 xDrive35i, X6 xDrive50i, and X6 M vehicles ever registered in the states of Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands or “Zone A.”

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger front air bag module, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin March 1, 2018. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Thanks for additional research!

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain
2007-2013 X5 xDrive30i,
X5 xDrive35i,
X5 xDrive48i,
X5 xDrive50i,
X5 M,
2009-2010 X5 xDrive35d vehicles and
2009-2013 X6 xDrive35i,
X6 xDrive50i,
and X6 M vehicles

ever registered in the states of Alabama,
California,
Florida,
Georgia,
Hawaii,
Louisiana,
Mississippi,
South Carolina,
Texas,
Puerto Rico,
American Samoa,
Guam,
the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan),
and the U.S. Virgin Islands
or “Zone A.”

ok I think this is easier to read!
I believe certain is a key word here even tho its kinda strange!

2013 X5 M - check

My car was only registers in following states as far as I know:
New York
New Hampshire - by me
Massachusetts - by me
I'm not sure what "Zone A" means but I assume I'm not in it!

So I guess there is no active recall for my car!

Yes, much easier to read! Certain means some, not all - while strange I'm sure it was written by the legal department. Sounds like the way I'd write it - I'm an attorney.

My X5 M was first registered in California before I purchased it. Hence why it was included in the recall.

The language interesting to me is the "ever registered in the states of..." Why are those states the only states where the airbags are being replaced? What does where the car was registered have to do with an airbag potentially not functioning correctly?

I just took my 2013 x5m in today for the passenger
airbag recall but I’m from Cali. I also received a recall notice
for the airbag. So maybe if you didn’t received notice you all good then
