Rotor Thickness for X5M - could use some help
I am contemplating joining the ranks of X5M owners and looking at a 2011 with about 60K miles. Pre inspection by this out of town dealer yielded the following rotor thickness but dealer doesn't know if they are close to minimum tolerances. I can't find anything online or this forum for X5M rotors. My local BMW dealers is non-responsive. So I'm turning to this community for help. Does anyone know what the minimum thickness is? Here are the current measurements.
RF 34.80mm, LF 34.80mm RR 23.32mm, LR 23.53mm At $450 per rotor that would be a pricey replacement. Prior service history did not list rotor replacement so I am assuming these are the original rotors. Pads are at about 50%. I'll bet this is the second set of pads on original rotors. Thanks for your help. |

Look to Centric for replacement rotors, they are more than half what OE rotors go for. Hopefully they have your fitment.

Minimum rotor thickness should be stamped ON the rotors... If the shop doesn't know that, I'm not sure how much I'd trust them for any other information...
I could be wrong, but I've never seen a rotor that doesn't have the minimum thickness stamped on it somewhere...

Knowing this that dealer inspection is worthless, I would not trust their guess-estimate on this X5M. Anybody worth their weight in salt knows the minimum rotor thickness is stamped on the rotor. If you are serious about the car pay the $200 and have a local BMW independent shop inspect it.

In the dealers defense their inspection was performed a month ago. I found the rotor measurements in their notes. This is not a BMW dealer. I had not asked them to remove the wheels and check the rotors. This is my own research. But I'm sure they noticed the rotors were getting close to the end. That part annoys me.
I was able to find a picture last night of a front rotor. Min thickness stamped was 34.4. That leaves only 0.4mm remaining before it is at minimum spec. Am I crazy or does that sound like a couple months of driving before they are spent? I did not find any pics of the rear rotors but I suspect they are also close. Would love to hear your opinions. I have no idea what the thickness is of new to gauge how much useful life is left. I intend to ask the dealer to check min thickness so I have complete information. Thanks. |

And I did have a PPI performed. They were supposed to do that yesterday afternoon. I don't have the results back yet. I also spoke to the previous owner. Did a little research and hunted him down. Was very open about his experience, which was only good. Truck have a very clean history He was the second owner and did not know if rotors had ever been replaced. But so far everything checks out. Now it's just a matter of getting it at the right price.

Ok, got all my answers
F rotor is 36mm new. Min is 34.4 R rotor is 24mm new. Min is 24.4 If they measured correctly, I have 0.4mm left in front or about 25% left. Rear has more than 1mm left which is about 60% remaining. I estimate I have about 8-10,000 miles before I would need to change out fronts. Rears could probably last another set of pads. |

idrive says 40,000 miles which is ridiculous. I bought the truck at a Jag/Land Rover dealer in AL. They are affiliated with a BMW dealership next door. That's who inspected it after trade-in and made those measurements. I'm convinced they reset the system. No way those rotors will last that long. And idrive has the pads at 40,000 also. Another fantasy The pads are already past 50%. I got a good enough deal that a brake job won't hurt my wallet. And so far she purrs like a kitten. My tail pipes had baked on carbon that I still haven't been able to clean completely. Several have mentioned that excessive carbon build up along rear valence and tail pipes is a sign injectors are going. No such film developing on this truck since I got it. Hopefully it will hang in there a good while longer. But I am prepared to eventually replace injectors. I think the previous owner never bothered to clean the tips. I thought they were painted matte black.

FYI.... RealOEM.com provides the minimum rotor thickness when you click on the rotor part number. The F85 X5M rotors have the same dimensions front and rear to the E70 X5M.
As mentioned in previous posts: Front PN: 34116789069 Front Diameter: 395 mm Front New: 36.00 mm Front Minimum: 34.40 mm Front Rotor Link: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part...&q=34116789069 Rear PN: 34216795318 Rear Diameter: 385 mm Rear New: 24.00 mm Rear minimum : 22.40 mm Rear Rotor Link: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part...&q=34216795318 |
