Front rotor wear
What is the expected life span on X5M front rotors assuming no track time and easy to moderate stopping behavior? There is a significant lip that has formed already on the front rotors at 30K miles.
Does anyone know BMW's specification on what the minimum thickness is considered acceptable before the rotors would need to be replaced? |

When you reset the car's warning system for brake pads, it sets 50k miles. You should get more than that out of your rotors. From my experience, when you get to the pad's minimum thickness, you are far from the rotor's minimum but I'm sure this can vary. I'd check to see if the lip is just as significant on all sides to see if the wear is even. BMW replaced my pads/rotors under warranty at 45k miles as a nice gesture. They still had life left in them but I didn't check the rotors. I did them myself the next time and found the rotors had worn less than half into the minimum wear which surprised me. I don't know if more spirited braking will effect rotor wear more proportionally as the pads wear faster. The rotors are very sturdy and will likely work just fine well past the minimum wear BMW sets... in non-track driving. That's just my opinion based on what my experienced (non factory BMW) mechanic told me. He said BMW wants you to have 100% of the braking capacity on M series cars so they set the limits high. Have you measured the thickness? You can easily do it with a caliper or any shop can quickly do it.

I'm at 60k miles, needed new rear pads. Said screw it, ordered all four rotors, and a whole new set of pads (powerstop Z23).
BMW South Atlanta is cheapest for rotors, all four for around 1200, i had my dealership price match it so i didnt pay for shipping

Front rotors were shot back rotors could've gone a little longer just figured do everything all at once. Went with full Genuine BMW bought the front from New Parts container on eBay Genuine BMW for $330 each and the back for $215 each from genuinenewparts.com
