Will installing a 90c thermostat increase N63 engine life?
Some people change their thermostat on n63 engines because they are very hot. They use 90c thermostat instead of 105c. This will double life of every gaskets and other parts because engine will run cooler. What you think?

I think BMW is currently in the business of cooking its motors just to eek out every ounce of fuel economy they can to meet government standards. It's not a recipe for longevity, but BMW is basically a lease company that doesn't seem to care about what the cars are doing 10+ years from now. I'd do it in a heartbeat.

These engines cannot last 3 years. after 40000km they start burning oil, oil leaks and so on. It is because of the temperature. I do not care about government standards. Want to increase engine life. Will it work?

I dunno that 15*C will make that much of a difference, but it sure as hell can't hurt. As well (and this is a tip from a MB diesel expert, remove the belly pan and engine cover in the summer if you do a lot of stop'n go. The under-hood heat actually cooks the hydraulic fluid out of the special MB engine mounts.
One thing though, on my american cars, you had to retune for it, otherwise you'd get a code after going to closed-sensor mode(when the engine had warmed up). I imagine the same would be true with german cars?

Operating temperature for n63 is above 90c. It will not throw any errors if you buy a good thermostat, correctly adjusted. If it opens at 88c, you will have an error but not on 90c.
I am just interested, is that modification worth for only 10c.. |

Will running a 90c thermostat help oil seals,last longer. YES! Will it double their life no..
Oil seals loose their ability to seal over time as their elastosizers evaporate and migrate out of the seal. Once this happens the seal looses its flexibility and hence it’s ability to conform to the shape of the sealing surface and leaks begin. Lowering temps will reduce the speed of the loss. Adding oil additives like atp-205 help which restore the elastosizers can fix he problem too. The major issue is the seals bmw use aren’t well suited to the engine design, Without changing something every n63 will need new valve stem seals at around 70k miles. The x5m s63 uses a low temp thermostat and very rarely has valve steam seal issues. Like never. Oil leaks yep. BMWs v8s are leaky. Will s63 engine's thermostat fit to n63 engine? How lower are the temps on s63?
I checked s63 thermostat part number and it is the same to n63's thermostat. 11537586885 it is the part number. This code shows that they are both 105c |

I doubt changing a single component like thermostat will change the engine temp, BMW needs 32-bit processor to maintain this engine. Think, many-many parameters to monitor and use to run the engine properly.
BTW, it seems to be electronics meaning it's potentially open and close (with varying degree of flow control) electronically by engine function; unlike the ole day where the spring tension dictate the opening and at what temp. Agree the emission and CAFE dictate how BMW design their engines, so BMW makes them run super hot to appease govt. |
