X5M transmission and response, how does it compare to the M3?
I have a 335i - which has the N54 twin-turbo engine. Upon comparing it to an M3, you can tell how much more slowly the 335 responds to inputs - i.e the auto transmission is slower than the DCT, and the throttle response is not as instant.
Having said that, and while I do understand the X5m also has a normal auto and turbos - how does it compare to say, an M3 in terms of pure responsiveness and "rawness"? The M3 is pretty much rifle-bolt, slam, bam, instant downshift and acceleration with a great exhaust - you can instantly tell it from driving it. How's the X5M? I had a brief drive in an X6M, but I did not really get to "test it" out and properly drive it, so I remain curious. |

Yep. I drove a friends 2010 X5M, and was seriously impressed with how fast and solid the shifts were. You won't be disappointed.

I listened to several youtube video launches and gear shifts and just through the video it is apparent that this truck (X5M) does not Bang through the gears like the new M5. It is slowed down purposefully from BMW engineers. A truck with that kind of weight and towing package would never fire through gears like their sports cars. Too much abuse is always too much abuse.
I will say that the tuning of the trans computer should be able to address this to a degree. I am sure they already are. |

That's because the M5 also has a DCT transmission.

OP I own both, however my M3 is a 6spd but I've driven the DCT enough to accurately comment.
For the 6spd auto in the x5m I am impressed when using the paddles. If you leave the car in auto it tries to get into the highest gear it possibly can, which is not where or what this engine wants to do. Leave it in sport mode as does a pretty darn good job with selecting which gear it should be in. It may not hold gears as long as you want it to, but it will adapt to your driving style pretty well. Unless I am in traffic or getting the car warmed up I am never in auto or sport. I will always be using the paddles. I'm surprised that there isn't any software updates for this tranny from a tuner. But there has to be demand as well. |

I had a M3 with the MDCT and now the X5M. The shifts between the two are night and day. The M3 is instant gear to gear and you can get a good snap from each gear.
The auto in the X5M is very good, better than any GM 6 Speed i had, but not as crisp and clean as the MDCT. That trans is the best I've driven. Amazing how good the shifts are and how responsive it is. The 6 Speed auto in the X5M is no slouch but just not as good as a MDCT.

I also own both and agree with both posters before me here. The X is amazing fast and shifts pretty quickly when you want it to, the paddles are very responsive for an automatic transmission, but DCT is another technology and superior. I am happy with the transmission in the X and you will enjoy it for the raw power, it still can give your passengers whiplash if they are not used to it......

You X5M/X6M owners, have you noticed how jerky 2nd into 3rd can be when it just sport and mode M mode with paddles? Unless you revs above 4k it is so jerky. Reminds me of e gear or the old r tronic in the R8.
I'm really surprised that there has not been any software adjustments by the tuning community. With my ESS tune, I'm not sure if its the reclabiration of the software, but it does rev a lot quicker and up shifts and downshifts slightly better with the tune. |

they are both completely different transmissions. The DCT is 2 trans in 1, with a different engagement method than the X5M auto transmission. The DCT is designed for lightning fast shifts while the X5 transmission is designed to shift fast yet still be strong enough to tow/lug around the kerb weight of the car. If anyone here has driven the E46 M3 SMG, I'm sure you will agree that the X5M feels more like that transmission (when pushing it to the limit) than anything else. A better comparison would be the E46 SMG and the X5M transmission.

Agreed on the SMG. That's the ticket!!
Nevertheless not a bad tranny. If they make the new x5m with a DCT somehow that would incredible |
