Texas, Austin actually was one of the places we were looking at to move to from Calif. weather is a little too harsh for us but it met all of the other criteria. didn't know about being able to write off taxes on cars.

Not just cars. Any local and state sales tax for all items I believe. I think there is a standard deduction for it but it you make any big expenditures such as cars, boats, etc. then it usually is higher than the standard deduction if you itemize. Don't hold me to it, but I remember my accountant telling me last year that my X6 purchase this last year should get me a few bucks back because it will put me over the standard deduction for local sales tax.
