40d, 50i or m50d?

Hi,

I'm going to order a new X6 soon and can't decide on which model to choose between 40d, 50i and m50d.

40d is the most economical choice.

50i sounds best but will probably cost 2 liters per 10km.

50d is better looking and will feel more special but is at least 12000 euros more expensive.

Anyone drive all of these and care to share their thoughts?

OK so I guess it's swings and roundabouts. If you are planning on keeping the car for a good few yearsthen go for economy. If you are changing it sooner then why not treat yourself? ;-)

I had an X6 40d from new for just under 2 years, and now have an X6 M50d.
I wanted an M car but like the higher driving position of the SUV so M5 was out (M3 too small for everyday but want one for weekend garage weapon!). Love the sound of the X6M and the mahoosive bhp under your foot, but did not like the thought of 10mpg on an average day of lead footedness. The 50i does not fare much better if you check owners' forums.
Also liked the idea of having that 3rd turbo for lag free driving through the entire rev range; plus that ridiculously large amount of torque available from the diesel engine at low rpm. Check out Youtube clips for the nice engine note above 3k rpm also.
I do like the way the torque is fed in, on a continuous wave which does not relent. When you shift the stick to the left into S mode and floor it, it is like a greyhound out of the trap. In Manual change mode using the paddle shifters you can shift gear later and enjoy it even more (if you have fingers about 3 feet long to reach the paddles that is!!)
My wife has a 2011 model X5 M40d, which is no slouch - but the 50d doesn't just pull away from it, it annihilates it. Yes, I feel it worth the premium over the 40d, because it ticks another box for me - having a car with an M developed engine (yeah yeah yeah I know it's not a 'proper' M car LOLOL).
I had to buy one the second I saw one in the flesh. I drove past it in a cab one day, called into the dealer the next day and ordered one. 6 months later and finally I'm in it

Thx Snipes! I'm leaning towards the 50d as well since it will feel more special. The 40d is about 77k euro and the M50d is 88k ie both are expensive. But over three years I think the M50d will get a better value on the second hand market.

There is no way to try it here since they are only made to order but I did try the 550d and liked the feeling. The 550d of course is way faster on paper due to less weight and lower centre of gravity.

Have you tried the 50i and if so how does it compare in feel to the 50d? I could probably test drive a used 50i.

No I have not tried the 50i but on paper the 50d is same performance 0-60 and maybe a little better midrange due to the turbos and torque.

I have a 50d and I truely love it. I've driven the 50i and I would compare the two like this:
50d: anywhere from rolling to let's say 140 or so the 50d feels like it has even more punch. Incredible torque and when the turbos are already moving the throttle response is incredibly instant as in a very good "normal" petrol powered car. From a standstill there is still a very little turbo lag, which you feel less in the 50i. I have now 8'500 KM on it and an average of 9.8L/100 KM, if I do a longer mainly highway trip I average at 8L/100KM. The 50i does easily 14 - 20L/100KM depending how you treat it.
50i: at higher speeds >140 KM/H sprints better I think but that is not an aspect for me as I am never there...., the definite I gotta give the 50i for engine sound which is just beautiful. 50d in lower rpm still sounds like a diesel. If you accelerate hard it develops into a low deep growl and then it sound quit OK

Overall I find the 50d the better choice because you got all the punch you need in the speed region where it counts. Plus I did more than 1'000 KM with one tank one weekend on limited highways.

Great input peterc. Yeah I'm now down to engine sound as the main reason for 50i. I think I've lost interest in the 40d and its between the 50:s.

But I don't know if engine sound alone can motivate twice the gas bill

Do you know if there are any other differences between the m50d and others more than side mirrors, air intakes instead of fog lights and larger brake discs? Is there any difference in suspension, driveline etc from 50i?

Urm but it *is* better now - better than your 40d anyway (and I can talk because my last car *was* an X6 40d) LOLOL

It brings diesel up to a whole new level my friend. You should try one (you never know you might like it)

So 50d consumes a lot less? My 40d is on 12.6 litres average now.

Sorry I read it that the fuel consumption comment was separate and that the remark was purely pointing at performance. BMW cite the 40d as running 37.7 mpg (sorry for the imperial measurements - typical Brit!) and 50d at 36.7 mpg.
To me, the additional 75bhp and full second off the 0-60 mph dash is worth 1mpg - would you not agree?
As for 'better' that, again, to me meant improvement in the development of the diesel powered vehicle to bring it up to a level of parity with the larger petrol engine (but with better mpg). BMW cite the 50i as giving 22.6 mpg for instance. That equates to [the 50d giving] over 100 miles more on a tank; yet with the same base performance figures.

But not considering consumption the m50d feels like a less outdated option as well. When will a new x6 hit the market? End of 2014? Early 2015?

Good point. 50d has a different front bumper from previous models to allow for intercoolers, so if you also spec the LED adaptive lights you should be pretty much covered. I am adding BMW Performance grilles, rear lip spoiler, side skirts, rear diffuser and rear window slats. Not sure what else an LCI would look at (usually lights so maybe we will see more use of LED technology as it develops) so LED adaptives are a must have to futureproof you for now maybe.

I think that I have decided on the m50d. I like the promise of punch in speeds under 100kph and fuel economy feels like a good environmental choice as well as better second hand value (gasoline SUVs are not bought second hand here in Sweden).

I'm taking the 333M 20" rims, sapphire black metallic, chrome instead of shadow line window borders. It's gonna look like the one in this link:
http://www.autogespot.nl/en/bmw-x6-m50d/2012/07/28

Have to order before Friday to get 2012 price. Delivery is gonna be in may...

I would go for the 435M wheels, they're only available on the M50d, all the M Sport models have the 333Ms as standard or optional equipment.

I think those look nice on alpine white since they are dark gray but the 333:s look better on black.

I asked to get the 435Ms for winter tyres but that would be 6000 euros so I opted for 214:s at half that price

Good choice

You will be very happy with her.

One small issue I did have - it almost felt like the car had been electronically limited for the running in phase of 1000 miles. It might just be me, but the [very] few times I did squeeze the trigger before that point, it didn't quite *go* how I expected. However, almost as soon as 1000 miles had been reached, it was like Planet Torque had moved in

I chose to retain the 435 wheels (carbon black car) and standard M50 interior trim as they are specific to that model which I thought might aid residuals. However, I have already swapped out the front grille for BMW Performance black one, and put CF caps on the wing mirrors

Anyway, there are now 3 or 4 of us M50d guys on the forum. How long before we get our own page?!?
