Two problems. First, JD Power has enough categories so that everyone can glom a few "awards." It's little more than a participation trophy.

Second, based on the way it conducts its dependability "awards," if a car is complicated and confuses the driver, such as with sophisticated controls, that car gets marked down. Thus, simpler cars, with less sophistication, will do better on its surveys.

Bottom line is JD Power is as reliable as the Marquis Who's Who books. You pay, you get in.

+1. IMO the VDS is largely irrelevant because it only covers first 3 yrs of ownership. I really wish they stretched it out to 5 years.

Completely true and I agree. I'm in the industry and I can elaborate. First off there are such things as so called "perceived" quality. This is where the likes of Kia and Hyundai fall in. I know people with these cars and they're honestly not that great. Constant suspension issues and hub bearing problems even on low mileage cars. Just low quality parts used period.

Then second JD powers has has always been bias in some form or another.

You hit it 110% on the mark when you said complication and ease of use. People will give you a bad review because well my Bluetooth took 7 seconds to connect instead of 4 .

Not saying Kia and Hyundai haven't made long strides but they have ways to go. Kia ahead of Hyundai with entry end products are the same exact thing as Chevy is to Buick made by exact same operator in the same factory. Please give me a break and an unbiased article for once...

I used to be a die hard Honda/Acura guy. I lusted for the last gen TL Type S as my first sporty sedan despite the FWD. it was the last good looking Acura in my opinion

Now Acura has fallen in consumer reports and JD power rankings. Sad for a once highly desirable brand

Yeah what the hell are they doing over here with that ugly front grill. Reminds me of Lexus once the predator grill took off they can't seem to get rid of it. It's like they're still trying to convince you no really this looks good lol.

These JD power rankings are always suspect.

At the end of the day, the most "dependable" vehicles are Japanese and nowadays Korean too.

I don't understand how Buick is always near the top when legitimately all of their vehicles are badge engineered Chevys and other GM global models.

Also, what constitutes a "problem." Are transmission failures and infotainment bugs counted equally?

Wait until you sit in a Chrysler 300 lol. One of the worst modern interiors I've experienced. It's a panel gap party!

panel gap party. They never got on board like the whole industry converted to metric and stayed standard.
Ummm sir the fit and gap spacing was suppose to be 2mm not 2 inches

I don't even know about some of the Japanese branding being as good. Mitsubishi is junk, Nissan not that great and Toyota the once mass produced quality giant well they're in the average now as everyone has just simply caught up.

Everyone will once in a life time own a good and a bad car. Consistency is key, keep the drivetrain alive now days for 200k and you're solid imo. All the little crap can be replaced and changed rather at ease or low cost.

Still not convinced the Korean cars are that great.

Never liked Dodge or Chrysler products. OMG let's not even bring up the stuff from the 90's or early 00's. Shit was on the side of the road more then on the road. They had nothing but transmission issues.

Their lawnmover are decent though...

These Quality articles are very subjective, quality is a very personal thing, and is not easy to measure.

My wife has a 2014 MDX. Horrific infotainment setup. Worse, the phone pairs when it feels like it and we still can't figure out how to change settings. Other Acuras have this same 3 level setup and it might be the worst engineered POS I've ever used.

So in short, I think Acura's rating is probably too high
