My First X5!

Hi Everyone,

Just picked up a 2007 4.8i w/ Sports Package in California. It had a hair less than 74,000 miles at the time of purchase and previous owner had done a bunch of maintenance at around 70k (water pump/thermostat, gaskets, belts, fluids, front rotars - the list goes on). Vehicle is in decent cosmetic shape, few paint blemishes, leather scuffed here and there, and headlights were slightly cloudy. Nevertheless got a decent deal and thoroughly enjoyed the drive back to Colorado!

It's currently sitting next to my pristine 2007 335i in the garage. I did the 3M headlight restoration, and it turned out pretty well but not perfect. Spent about 4-5 hours on it total, so was expecting them to be flawless :/

Anyway, the car has a couple of issues that I'd appreciate your input on.

1. The car has the notorious six-speed 4.8i shifting issue. The TSB below describes how it behaves exactly. Has anyone who owns a pre 2009 4.8i been able to figure out how to fix it? Does the software update help? It's something I'm willing to live with, but if the shifting could be smoothed out, it would make me very happy.

2. The second issue is a weird one. The steering wheel position always goes down to the lowest position when I turn off the car. When I get back in and start the x5 it just stays there. The memory function works for the seats and the mirrors, but for some odd reason the steering wheel always has to be manually adjusted up. I've already tried playing with the settings in iDrive, and all three options yield the same result. My X5 is equipped with Comfort Access if that makes a difference.

Haha thanks. Yeah, that was kinda the idea behind getting it. Drove my 2003 Mazda 6s last winter with Blizzacks, and although it handled snowstorms like a champ, figured it was time for an upgrade

Congrats on your first X5! I'm only 4 months into my first X5 as well. How do you get in to the drivers seat, that close to the wall? At least it looks close.

I found that sometimes it takes a whole kit per headlight if their bad .... What was it that didn't make it perfect ? Don't forget to seal them and keep them seals or they will fog up again.

Congrats on your 50i. I bet that's a lot of fun. I'm enjoying the instant torque of the naturally aspirated V8, but I'm sure all the extra power of your twin turbocharged V8 more than makes up for it

You're right, it is fairly close, but I park just far away from the wall so I can open the door to it's first stopping point. My 335i is inches from the wall on the passenger side, gotta avoid door dings.

I should preface this by saying that I'm stickler for detail. They just look a little smudged in places. I redid the last 2 steps (wet sand and rubbing compound) three times but they don't look like my 335i's headlights which literally are perfect. The X5 will be garaged for the rest of the summer, so I'm going to try a few other things. Just ordered a bottle of Meguiars Plastx, I'm hoping that will get rid of whatever the 3M kit wasn't able to penetrate.

Oh and yes, I read about using a UV sealant. Do you recommend a particular brand? Thanks.

I wouldn't bother with a sealant and would suggest just getting clear film applied to the headlights. If done right, it should last a few years.

OP-Even though this is a couple months ago, congrats on the X5 addition. I'm new to this platform myself and I've had two 335s previously. Good luck with your collection thus far

Hey, thanks a lot! I'm on my second 335i as well. Really enjoying the X5. It handles the Colorado twisties like a car half its size and weight without any compromises in ride quality.

I saw your thread just now too. Nice looking ride you got there

That's awesome to hear how well the 335i does in Colorado, I'm not that far from Colorado. I had a built Evo 8 GSR which I was hoping to take back to Colorado and truly test it out but never had the chance.

Thanks also! Keep up the good work in the cars

Hi, I'm about to purchase an 07 X5 with the 4.8 V8, is this a reliable vehicle? I've had an 06 325i, 11' 135i, and currently own an 11' M3 all which have been very reliable. I do most maintenance and fixes on my own but would like to know if I should expect the same reliability or if it's gonna be a money pit? Thank you for your responses in advance!

It's like going to Vegas and placing a $20 bet... you either hit the jackpot or you pay the house

Since your a hands on guy, I would give the truck a thorough look over or you can pay any BMW dealership $295(roughly) for a pre sale inspection

I have an indie shop that I plan to take it to before I purchase it, I know there isn't a crystal ball to predict when things could go wrong but wanted to know common problems on them, such as when the N54 had the HPFP and wastegate bugs.
