E70 - X5M oil residue under airduct hose issue

I took it to dealer when I spot oil residue under the airduct or CCV? (it looks like caked on over some period), they performed pressure test and told me nothing is leaking and seeing oil residue under airduct is normal for X5M? - is this true?

The CCV system is not the best in filtering out oil from crankcase gasses. Some install oil catch cans to reduce the amount of oil going through the intake system.

Wow that's a good amount of oil!

Though not all catch cans are good in handling the volume. The small mishomoto that I had on the X5M wasn't filtering well. I swapped in the catch can from the supercharged Z3M in the X5M, since the filter and baffles are a different design. Fingers-cross that it does the job because I'm ready to move to the next project.

This is the oil I captured from the Z3M! The other pic shows a good area to check if your catch can is filtering well. There shouldn't be any oil there.

Wow is right! Pardon my ignorance but where does all that oil go (if not trapped by the catch can)? Back through the intake manifold or returned to the crankcase? Thanks.

The valvecover is designed to filter out the oil and return it to the crankcase. If oil goes pass the valvecover it'll go to two areas....directly to the intake manifold and intake pre-turbo.

And that is all ok, as per design? It just gets burned up with intake charge?

Yeah I think the design allows for a little bit of oil getting burned this way. Though over time the filtering components build up with oil film making it easier for oil to slip by. I even think the hoses coming from the valvecover was designed to capture oil as well. That "crinkle" hose design provides a lot of surface area and turbulence that help stop oil from going to the intake. However when oil fill in crevices, it allows vapor and oil to move faster through.

The BMW system has a return to sump.

You must be talking about the newer S63TU engine. I have a '13 with the S63 that didn't have the new CCV system so the blow by went directly into the intake and turbos - wish I had the newer design!

Right, I forgot that the diagram only applies to the TU. More reason to install a catch can.
