So took my x5 to the dealer for a water pump and a leaking oil filter housing. Engine has been flawless otherwise no noises and or strange things happening that would slide to something like this otherwise.
Was driving home and got a yellow heat warning pulled off the road and ran codes and got a water pump error. Towed to the dealer and engine would run fine and strong. After the tear down the thermostat still had the wax plug intact so they said no overheating happened. And reused the thermostat Anyway dealer replaced parts flushes coolant system new oil change took it outside to test drive and stalled it 3 times and got it back to the service bay ran codes found none took it back out and blew the motor, giant black puff of smoke, chained it back to the dealer. Oil serviced every 5k miles all fluids changed and was very keen on maintenance. They tried to blame my high mileage of 155k but they quickly backtracked. Their asking BMW for a good will as it's a 17k dollar fix. What do you guys think I should do? I figure the car gave the mechanic 3 hail marries something was wrong and got it back to the dealer it should have never been driven a Second time as something was wrong, and the decision to take it out a second time was on them. They did give me this paper where it showed mechanic took it out stalled it and took it out again and blew it. |

Sorry to hear about this
I remember reading u comment in 35i reliability thread few weeks ago how rock solid u car is at 155k miles. who knew! anyway I hope they'll take it off u hands or u'll get a new engine on them, either way its gonna suck and probably gonna take some time until its all resolved. I hope it works out for u and keep us updated!

CURSE YOU MURPHY !!!!!!!! was just telling my friend last week how well it's been doing, Then BAM! But hey the water pump defied the normal 75k death lol. But I have a feeling it's only dead because of something they did. |

A few E90 people have had N55 issues immediately after oil filter housing gasket replacement. The crank does not get oil and it freezes up.

Even though resale has really tanked on these, you’re going to take an additional hit when you have to provide a story about the engine to a buyer, even if the engine is newer. These engines are bulletproof, provided that they are serviced competently.

Why? A new engine is appealing to potential buyers.

Because a new engine always leads to questions:

Damn, this sucks bigly. Fingers crossed that BMW and the dealer step up and straighten this out to your satisfaction. I know you've put your heart into the car via some very nice mods, so I understand why this would be a particularly painful experience for you.

Agree. I have new turbos and new transmission (49K). plus all recalls/filtered air ducts/thrust bearings on 66K mileage X5M I just picked up. Definitely a big plus for me. For a 155K mileage vehicle, even more so.

Sorry to hear c but this could be a blessing in desguise. Could you imagine the fight it would have taken if you happened to be driving when the engine blew? You would be hiring a lawyer for sure.
The fact that it blew while their tech was driving it after they previously did work on it they are pretty much forced to own the situation. A new engine at your mileage would be amazing. You defintiely took good care of her and she didnt deserve it but this could work out pretty awesome in the end. Good luck dealing with this. |

Another helpful reason for a dash cam. I always watch the test drive and listen to shit they talk because they have no idea I have a dash cam... if something happens, you have a short documentary for the owner of the dealership... it's only about $100 for a decent one folks!

Thanks everyone for your encouragement !
Well so far all BMW dealer wants to do is give me $4500 and bmw USA $3500, so 8k total for a new car, they don't want to put the money into fixing the x5 with the miles mine has. Though they all agree it looks like new they can't put that kind of money into a car with that many miles and age. The dealer also doesn't want to put any money into fixing it, they will either give me $1000 dollars and take my car away or the money above for a new car and they'll junk mine. She doesn't deserve such a fate. So I've asked Bmw USA if they would consider the $3500 toward a fix and their looking into it. I've found an engine that's like new out of a CPO x5 2013 with under 50k miles of use and it looks like new and the aluminum is still shiny fresh for $4500 and the dealer will cut their charge of 5k to install an engine down by half so 2400 for the install of the used engine. So either way it's still a lot of money but I'd rather keep her going and sell it afterward to someone that would like it. It's got a lot of new stuff anyhow. I went and bought a 40e M sport during this mess as my wife needed a car and just wanted to try and put the mess behind me. The x5 40e was NOT bought at the dealer however, not sure I'm feeling all warm and cozy yet since their is a known issue with the N55 blowing up after the OFHG replacement and even the dealer acknowledged the issue but it's my mileage in the end that everyone ran from. Anyway I'll post more when I hear back next week. Thanks everyone! If bmw won't pony up the fix it cash I'll prolly just fix it myself and keep it in the garage till I get it all worked out. Anyway here's a pic of the new ride! Well the pics ain't working go fig! |

Sorry to hear about the engine. This post seems prophetic. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showp...2&postcount=33
Hope the delaer uses shop insurance and buys and installs a low mileage engine and gets you up and running again. |

Since you already replaced the vehicle just wait them out. Even if it takes a few more months. Most people who have had this happen don't pay anything for the replacement engine. Even people who were at non BMW repair shops. This is the exact situation shop insurance is for.
Mileage is irrelevant if they did something wrong that starved the crank of oil. Did they take apart the engine to determine the cause of the failure? Probably not as it is not easy to get the oil pan off the AWD. |

Well my insurance went and did an investigation and found the dealer at fault and sided with me.
Unfortunately it also means my X5 is now totaled and they will pay me 13,980 for my car. Not a bad offer considering the miles, I'll be getting towed back to my place here this week and start stripping parts. M brakes ID 6 BMW Performance exhaust with black tips. BMW aero body kit. Running boards M f10 m5 steering wheel. Roof rack system. 22" wheels and tires. Anybody want anything let me know. I'll be swapping stuff back to OEM before they tow her to a yard. |
