To extend warranty, or not, or sell ...

I have a 2010 X6 5.0 that has a little over 25,000 miles. The warranty/maintenance ends in a month. I'm the second owner, driving the last 11,000 miles. I've visited the shop on a regular basis for something, the latest being a rather expensive charge controller.

The BMW warranty extension (3 years) is $4700, after market warranty is about $4,300, and maintenance extension (two years) is about $2300. I have no idea how long I will keep the car, I like it so it might be a while.

Many have advised me "not to run without warranty". My short experience backs up this claim.

The difference between the after market warranty and the BMW isn't enough to drive me to them. The maintenance extension seems like a good idea as I will have brakes in the next 3600/8000 miles, and that seems like it will cost about $2k.

I hate to shell out another $7k, but, would really hate an unexpected $15k repair bill.

I know many here have faced the same situation. What did you do, and why?

I have the Easy Care extended warranty which i s a lot better than BMW warranty if you can get it. BMW warranty basically covers drive train but Easy Care covers everything, it saved me numerous times including a $3k bill for removing the dash to fix a problem with air conditioning. Get an extended warranty, one time major issue and it will pay for itself.

I agree ! 100% get the warranty. I just purchased a 2011 X5 50i and I could of got a better deal on the same car for 5k less but opted to get it through a dealership for more expensive so I had the CPO warranty with the car. Especially our cars can be expensive repairs. I would never want to own one without a warranty. I'm thinking about getting the maintenance package that you just mentioned for myself now. I believe that will be worth having as well.

If something breaks, just hit it with a hammer. Back in Russia, never fails!

J/k

Check into BMW Gold or Platinum warranties. The Platinum is supposed to mimic an extension of the full factory warranty. This is what I plan to do when the time comes.

If you like the car and want to keep it, nothing wrong with that; and as others have stated having a warranty is a great idea on these cars, or truly any more or less high end car.

Get the warranty. Saved me 1600 in oil leaks earlier this month.

Does after market warranty work done by BMW & BMW parts.
What is the reliability trend for your year/model?
Generally you drive low mileage which negates the need.

However, you do not know driving history of first owner and you say your experience supports the repairs required. Hence, may be wise to obtain. Only caveat is that you are unsure whether to keep, so if you resell, do not expect to get 100% back.
