Pipe identification X5 4.8is

I noticed today that there is a small plactic pipe (like Fuel or vacuum), between the plastic engine cover and the cooling fan, not linked to anything. The pipe is bended over the outflow pipe to the radiator, with an open end as if it should be attached to something.

What is this pipe for and should it be olugged into something?

I can not believe BMW will make a nice looking pipe, bring it all the way from the bottom of the engine and then let it end in the air !
