M Sport Package and new iDrive for the 2010 BMW X6
Our German editor at BimmerToday, found something interesting buried down in a German press release issued a few days ago: the 2010 BMW X6, September built, will receive for the first time, an M Sport Package. And even more exciting, BMW has finally announced that the 2010 BMW X5 and X6 models will be receiving the new iDrive controller and the Drive logic including the hard drive and USB port.
The X6 M Sport Package will focus not only on the exterior appearance, but also on increasing the engine performance. The M Package is exclusively reserved for the gasoline powered models. The BMW X6 xDrive35i will get 20 horsepower extra which will bring the total power to 326 horsepower. The already powerful X6 xDrive50i will receive a significant power upgrade: 40 ponies to a total of 449 horsepower. The M Package can only be combined with the two exterior colors: Alpine White and Titanium Silver. The package also comes with 20″ black wheels. Other components of the X6 M Sport Package are: BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line, black painted mirror caps, tailpipes with black color accents, Alcantara sport seats and Anthracite roof lining. No pricing has been announced at this time. Source: http://www.bmwblog.com/2009/07/06/m-...e-2010-bmw-x6/ Last edited by XBMW6; 07-06-2009 at 10:16 AM.. |

I think this is a great addition...Now you can get M flavor without all that power and high cost. Also, the engine upgrades in form of 40 HP should provide extra performance boost to the already powerful engine. Not to mention, the new iDrive controller and the Drive logic which includes hard drive and USB port. I've tried the new iDrive on the new 7-series, and I can tell you it's an amazing system compare to the previous generation.
Although they haven't annouced the pricing yet, I believe it will be much less than the M-power X6...This is especially good for customers who don't wanna pay high premium for the M version of the X6, yet want the M styling. I was initially waiting on the new iDrive system, now I have more reasons for the wait... |

I read the article and it said it would have Alcantara sport seats and Anthracite roof lining.
Isn't Alcantara a non-leather product. Could get leather as an option? |

I got very excited when I read the story, but when I found out that it's only offered in two exterior colors and only one interior choice (Black)...now that's really disappointing. Why limit customers choices to only few color options?! Porsche, for example, gives you the choice to choose minor details such as your seatbelt color on their entry models, and here for such premium vehicle only limited!!
For the X5, they had the M package with good choice of interior and exterior colors, but no extra power. Now they've added the power and taken off color options... To be honest, I think this is really stupid marketing move from BMW. Last edited by XBMW6; 07-29-2009 at 07:35 PM.. |

I understand the major differences between the standard X6 xDrive50i and the X6 M version are:
-- Exhaust manifolds/turbos - more hp and tq -- Front/rear power bias adjusted to provide less understeer, more like a pure rear wheel drive -- Front and rear bumper fascias -- iDrive update The "M" package won't have the X6 M front and rear bumper fascias will it? Other than cosmetic, I'm wondering what the difference between the X6 xDrive50i M Package and X6 M version will be? |

For the $20k+ over my 50i just don't see it. Basically more HP but if Dinan ever finishes doing an X6 that will not mean much. Also the Dinan approach of stages is what most folks would like BMW to offer. IF BMW thinks it can survive the new economic climate ( which is here to stay) they will need to get more customer friendly rather than the "we're BMW , you will take what offer, how we offer it" approach.

That's exactly what I mean...if you really need to compete in the current tough economic environment, you need to be more aggressive with the competitors and offer attractive packages, not just limit customer's choices...

I think it's interesting that they are offering a M Performance package that so closely mimics their full M version. I heard a lot of people scoff when BMW announced an X6 M, and I took it with a grain of salt - after all, who that worked on the original M projects would recognize anything that BMW is badging an M today. It's Ok with me because there was a uniqueness and a performance edge right off the showroom floor. I could see an M Sport package on the Z4 (e89) because they aren't offering a Z4 M (yet) so a person can get close to an M in that model. But, after studying front and rear suspension photos of a 1st gen Z4 M and comparing those to the e89, it looks like there is very little difference between them when you add the M Sport package. And like you said dmlgc, Dinan can make up the difference quite easily. So again what's the diff? BMW is trying to slice and dice this M packaging in so many different ways, you got to wonder if they aren't making a marketing blunder. I think one of the things that bothered me is reading about people buying Z4's that got a really sh*tty radio who didn't upgrade to the premium sound system. A car that has a base price of $40K-$50K and goes up to $70-$80 US should not get a shitty radio no matter what. Make the base radio really good (so you can hear it well with the roof down), and the premium sound system damn good. Think of what kind of kickass sound system you can get installed aftermaket for $2,000! Then, when you consider what the Japanese makes are offering for many $1,000's less, plus their electronic packages are far superior to BMW's, you really have to wonder. |

m sport is just an options package on "lesser" models to make them look closer to the real m - bmw have been using this tack to bump the sales take on their models for a very long time. the 50i m sport is still 100 ponies down on the real deal.

I just purchased a 2010 X6 xDrive5.0i with "7RR Performance Upgrade". The list price of that option is $1,500 USD. My Sales Rep told me it is a 40 HP upgrade. On the sales sheet for my car I see it also has a line for "Increased Top Speed Limiter". Could that be the "M Sport Package"?
