Life after manufacture's warranty

My 2011 35d will be soon out of manufacture's warranty.
I know this topic has be covered but I was wondering what's the most recent feedback.
Did you get an extended warranty though a third party? (I don't think I can extend mine with BMW).
What coverage did you get? Was it worth it?
Thanks.

It has been discussed recently ad nauseum. A simple search will provide you lots of different perspectives.

This is true. I can say this. Owning an X5///M with no warranty is a little scary, but whatever. Life is meant to be lived. I figure if I can afford to buy, I better be able to afford the maintenance.

Truth is, most prospective buyers don't think that way. They buy the car, but not cost of the maintenance that goes along with owning a true M car.

I have a 2011 x5 d and that things in the shop all the damn time. I would recommend a warranty. Last time it was for a maf sensor/iat sensor module. Had nox sensors replaced. Some sort of turbo related parts. Vacuum control module and some other bits and ends. I'm sure out of pocket would have cost 5k already. Get the extended and dump it at 100k or 6 years unless you want some steep repair bills.

I know, most people just buy the car and don't think about TRUE cost of ownership (that means proper maintenance done ON TIME with quality parts). Most people just buy the cars and "dump" them right before the warranty expires, leaving the next owner to deal with things as they start to fail from poor maintenance.

See what I mean?

That all being said, its perfectly acceptable to only own it with warranty, but I guess what I'm trying to say is that there shouldn't be any fear of owning an expensive vehicle out of warranty. You have to plan for maintenance and just be ready if something happens. Ideally, you're capable of DIYing some of the smaller stuff to save money. That's what I try to do.

Case in point, I bought the X5///M knowing it was originally a $95K vehicle. To buy something that expensive and not expect expensive repair bills would be silly. But, if you can't keep $1-2000 extra laying around for an unexpected maintenance bill, then you probably shouldn't buy that type of vehicle. I got a great deal on the vehicle, so if I have to dump $5k into it for maintenance, then I still have a good vehicle at a fair price. I guess that's just how I look at it. Good luck.

I forgot to mention that I have a e46 m3 with 182k on it. I paid around 12 k repairs in time (clutches, control arms, subframe reinforcement, suspension). I still love that car and I'll keep it forever.
So I do expect to pay for the maintenance and I budget it.
I'm just wondering if it was worth getting the extended warranty overall for a 35 d and what are the providers out there.

I think if you no longer have a car payment on the thing its ok, but having to pay a car payment and probably another 500 a mo for repairs would get old quick

Well, given the reliability of the E70, I would absolutely say an extended warranty or a CPO certification is a good choice. They wanted over $400 just to do the CPO inspection when I bought my X, and then I had to fix everything they found wrong with it at the dealer, in one hit, before they'd give me the CPO certification. At that point, I saw the CPO certification costing me $2-3000, and I didn't find it worth it. However, will I spend at least that in the next 2 years on maintenance, perhaps... Perhaps not though.

$500/mo on repairs and maintenance seems a bit high, although if you have one major service job, I suppose it can approach that.

I think the best thing anyone can do is get a thorough PPI before purchase, and then weigh the options. If you own zero tools or have zero mechanical skill, get a warranty.
