Rearview camera question
Hey guys I have a question about a rear view camera.
I have a 2011 x5 that is having a flickering issue periodically with the rear view camera. The dealer says it needs to be replaced. I pulled the rear panel and it is very easy to get to the camera and they are fairly easy to come by. The question is would it be a direct replacement or is there coding that's needed? Of course the dealer wants $800 for the job and the camera is around $300. Any help is appreciated! |

Is your 2011 a early 2010 build date? Otherwise it would be covered under warranty. my 2012 was built in late march 2011so that is the only reason why I ask.

Yea, sorry should have included that. Early 2010 build. I figured that would be the best route to go was do it myself. I guess the bigger question can it be coded by someone other than the dealer, like a vendor from one of these sites? Or os there more advanced things that had to be done by a tech.

My guess is that the output of the camera is probably one of the industry standards (you'd want to match the resoultion), but the field of view for the camera would also need to be the same for an aftermarket unit to work properly. You may also find the low-light visibility may be different, giving you an unusable image at night on some.

I found an oem camera that seems readily available online. I would go that route rather than trying to retrofit an aftermarket camera assuming the camera is the problem here.

I also have a 2011 and it started doing it a few days ago. Not in the morning but in the afternoon if the weather is hot. Off to the dealership when i get some time.

It has been cooler this week and no problems. I have searched and others have had problems when the weather has been hot. Hot or cold i should not have any problems. I will post when i get to the dealership. Thanks

Re: Rearview camera question...
Per attached, this back-up camera system is seriously complicated. Along with the three cameras, there are several other active and passive components to go wrong.
For instance, the display is dynamically affected by both speed- and turning radius. And there's an automatic defroster that thaws the lens whenever the ambient temperature dips below 32°F. The system also accesses the vehicle's ride-height sensor. And it knows when a trailer is attached — which enables a zoom function. It goes on... After about a year, the system on my 2010 X5M had become more-or-less unusable due to flicker. The dealer replaced all three cameras to no avail. Eventually the problem turned out to be a faulty wiring harness. Attachment. |

Hi All,
I too am having issues with the rear view camera on my 2010 X5M. As others on the board have experienced, it flickers and becomes unusable. It is much worse in hot weather, so much so that around 28 degrees Celsius it simply goes black. The side cameras seem fine, as does the PDC, it's just the camera in the tailgate. So far the camera has been replaced (under warranty) but that didn't fix it. From what CRM102B said, it seems that the cabling is the likely culprit. Has anyone else had this issue, and can let me know exactly what was replaced to fix it, so I can let my dealer know. Thanks! |

KeithOwen, my 2011 goes into the dealership tomorrow for the same problem. I will give an update when all is working along with all that was done with part numbers.

My camera was acting up similar to KeithOwen's, so first I pointlessly replaced it (hence one for sale in classifieds), then procured the cable and - after the sticker shock weared off, - replaced it.
