Stagger will not cause any problems. It is the diameter which is the most important. It is best to stay close to stock rolling height to not effect your speedo.

But you run 275/40 20 all around for winter correct? Do you have pictures? On our diesel I run the 275/40 20 all around however I have replica 20x9.5 and 20x10.5 wheels. When I buy winters for the M I think I will stick with the 275/40 315/35 although the options are limited fit that size.

The 275/40 20 tire on the 315/35 20 fits but it is really stretched. I will get a pic for you. I didn't like it at first but for a winter tire it really does a great job in the snow.

The OEM rim sizes are 10" front and 11" rear, I did see an X5M with 275/40 on the 11" rim I also that it looked too stretched for my liking. The options on the 275/40 20 are vast so it might be worth the compromise

The 275/40 fits the 10.5" replica wheel nicely

Winter- Salt/Rims

CAn You Guys tell my how is your rims after winter season looks , I mean paint on it , have you noticed any pitting or paint coming out due to strong chemicals or salt used for melting snow/ice on the road and highways?

What size wheel (wheel width) and offset are you running for this tire set up 255/50/19 ?

If need to flush up the rears I will put spacers on.

Thought I would contribute with my choice for my X5M. I ordered the Nokian Hakkapelitta 8 SUV tires in 275 40 20/295 40 20 sizes. After the multiple freezing rain days we had in November and December last year, I decided to try the studded tires. I am hoping that BMW's sound insulation will help keep me from getting agitated on the days when the roads are dry and the studs are chattering on dry pavement.

Just read through the whole thread and I'm leaning towards going w/ the Continental DWS all seasons this winter.

I barely made it through last winter here in Chicago on the stock Dueler H/Ps - it was a dumb decision. Worthless - completely worthless and immobilized on tiny inclines at low speeds on packed snow. Did I mentioned they were worthless? Remind me to bitch about how this truck came w/ heated rear seats and BMW preaches about all their safety features but still sell trucks w/ summer tires and cold weather package in cold climates. All seasons should accompany the cold weather package imo.

So lesson learned. However, I refuse to do a square setup. One of my absolute favorite features of the MSport is the staggered setup. Those fat rears are just amazing. So with that said I'm willing to sacrifice absolute pure performance to keep the "look". Before anyone flames me about it, yes I know that the all seasons are not the best option either. I'm not in Canada, or Colorado, just downtown Chicago and maybe one trip to Northern Michigan so I think I should be good w/ all seasons.

Any strong opinions that I should fork out the additional $500 a get the Pirelli Ice & Snow run flats? Will I have to mess around w/ the speedo on the non run flat Contis?

I'm swapping whatever I go with onto the wheels I've got, no second set of wheels.

a. the staggered 20" with DSW set up gave you just about the same lousy performance as the stock Dueler H/P ... the problem is the massive staggered size ...

b. when you're ready to swap your winter tires for your regular tires, you may be told that this is NOT recommended because they are Run Flats! Some tire places, including the dealers, will not swap because of the stiff sidewalls, etc. RFT are designed to be mounted once ... they say.

All this swapping WILL scratch your wheels and could cause TPMS damage ... and you won't know until after everything is mounted and you picked up the car ...

c. After you swap + balance 3 or 4 times, you will have spent almost as much as buying a second, dedicated set ... just saying.

I have to believe an all season tire w/ a fair amount of praise here and elsewhere will be much better than the Dueler slicks. As mentioned in my earlier posts, I'm not crossing mountain passes in my X.

Not planning on putting the Duelers back on before the truck goes back at the end of my Owner's Choice period fall of 2016 so I'm not concerned about the cost of swapping and mounting adding up. Lastly, I sure hope the shop I'm using to mount the new tires doesn't scratch up my rims, that would be pretty awful service - I'm not having a gas station attendant do it.

Little plug for Tire Rack - their customer service is fantastic. It's a breath of fresh air to speak to someone who actually seems to want to help a customer, enjoys their job and is knowledgable about the product they're selling. My dealership was grouchy, clueless, absurdly over priced as well as refused to let me ship to them from the Rack (granted they wanted to sell me their stock but the grouchiness and stupidity came before I inquired if I could ship to them). Btw Audi dealership welcomed us shipping winters to them for my wife's car last fall.

Tire Rack rep also volunteered the info PAX5 mentioned above about certain installers refusing to deal with going from run flats to non run flats on OEM rims. He recommended a shop nearby who are noted as being willing to do that no problem. (that's not for you PAX5)

I was in the same position (I live around Naperville).
But I left the 20" 333's with Duellers untouched and bought a 2nd set of 255/50/19.
Came with DWS's, but I have to agree how wrong it looks with the wide flares designed for 31,5cm wide wheels and everything, and then you slap those 25,5cm on there... I need spacers ASAP!

Looks like a fat lady with skinny legs, because those legs are getting their workout in from carrying all that fat from the handicap parkingspot all the way through the MacDonald's door: the drive thru is busy and she's hungry!

It just amazes me how many people are appalled by 'the look' of the stock square wheel configuration, with winter tires, on an E70 with the wide fender flares.

If you see enough snow to want/need a set of dedicated winter tires, on square wheels, I'd be more interested in having a tire/wheel combination that provides the best traction and stability on snow and ice, rather than what combination of spacers, etc provides the best look.

You're not going to have 'the look' for long if you slide into a guard rail anyway.

Since we live very close to each other and experience the same conditions. I have been driving cars for many years in this area and was convinced a long time ago that dedicated summer winters are the way to go. I have driven 540,545,550,X5's,M3 in winters and have never had an issue. I did have Micheline Pilot A/S on my 540 M-sport for 1/2 a season and that was more than enough to make me realize that All Seasons did not work well. Yes I could drive around but there was no confidence.

Once I moved to dedicated winters on the 540, i was shocked on just how much better the dedicated snows were. I never really had a "get going" issue it was all the other aspects which were greatly improved. Stopping, turning, starting was way better.

Around that same time, I got my wife a X5 4.4 w/ 20" summers and did not have a chance to get a set of winters and got stuck in a very light early snow and it was so scary that I would never understand how anybody could run summers in the snow.

On a side note, I was driving to pick up my son at day care in my 550 w/ winters and there was a guy in a 535 xdrive which just happen to be going to the same place. There was about 2-3 inches of snow on the road and was cold so there was not much slushy and more snow covered. I was not paying attention until I parked and the gentleman parked next to me. The jumped out of his car and said "How in the hell were you able to drive in this snow with your 550 when I could barely drive in my 535 xdrive. I was sliding all over the place and you seem to just go!" I simply explained I have winter tires and he had all season.

As for looks of the X5 w/ 255's compared to the 275/315's I completely agree that it just looks wrong. My wife hates the look of her car w/ the skinny's but she does say that when she see's people sliding around and dreading the snow, she can drive with complete confidence and has no worries of ice and snow. And like what was said earlier, you car may look bad on 255/19's but looks even better than the rental car/cracked up X5.

Thanks for the replies guys. They have to be better than the 'slicks' this beast comes with.

I'm getting a very slight but noticeable vibration in the wheel around 50mph.

Any insight as to what it may be?

New tire break in? If so how long should I expect it to last?

Balance issue?

Alignment issue?

Any thoughts much appreciated.


Bridgestone Dueler HP summers w/ 9200 miles on them on the left, Conti Extreme Contact DWS all seasons on the right. This is a shot of the rear 315s.

Btw there's a long thread exclusively about theses DWS with a lot of good info - can't link when posting from iPhone. I didn't come across it until after deciding on these but anyone looking should search and read that one as well as this one here.

if your getting tire vibration i would get them re-balanced. Could have been a bad balance or it could be the tire. It is better to get the vibration taken care of early instead of waiting for them to break in. A tire should not "balance it self after a break-in period", the tire should be in balance.

How is the tire wear on your duelers at 9200. If they are not wearing evenly and you don't take corners like you have a M3 then you will have some signs of alignment issues. I have found with the 275/315 setup that the alignment will show rather quickly. 9200 is about the 1/2 life of these tires so alignment should be easy to see.
