Looking for a X5, need some owners input.
I currently drive a tuned 2011 335 Xdrive but I've been thinking about moving up to an X5 for the extra space etc. I'm looking at the E7x body style and would like to get some feedback from owners in regards to things to avoid or "look out" for. The N55 in my 355 has been great so far (54,000 kms) but I think I want the 4.8 to get away from a turbo engine but still have some decent power. Any suggestions?

I seriously doubt you will be happy "getting away from a turbo engine" , coming from a 335i and going to a NA 4.8. I would strongly recommend X5M.
Search and you also will find an interesting thread on going from M3 to X5M. Cheers.

Love my 09 4.8. Which I'll be selling soon 😉
Favorite car that I've owned so far.. I've had 03 745, 04 x5 4.4, 07 tahoe... Thing handles awesome, has some balls, sounds good, perfect amount of space, and the body still looks modern. I'm shopping for a cpo x6 50 now, but the x5 will be missed... Try to find one with the leather dash, its so much nicer... |

I had a 07 e70. 4.8na and was disappointed. If your looking at e70 v8's then get an LCI my11+. The 07 was a bit under powered and the 6 speed trans was not very good. When you got on it, it would down shift to the lowest gear for the speed which would put you outside of the power band and the thing would hesitate badly before it up shifted and would start I move. Very unsettling.
The 8 speed trans in the my11's + is a great transmission. Personally I think the LCI e70's are all around better x5.

If you want pre LCI model with the V8, I would suggest you research the N62 engine that came in them. If you want an LCI V8, I would research the N63 that comes in them. If you want an X5M, I would research the S63 engine that comes in them. Those motors are used in various BMW's and most problems are common with some unique to the platform they are put in.

I recommend getting the LCI E70 as the pre-LCI is looking quite dated these days. I have the 35i and it's perfectly fine for what I use it for. If you want something with more balls, get the LCI 50i. Or just the X5M.

Get a 35d. I went from a 11 135i to a 35d and couldn't be happier with the power and haven't had one issue yet. Coming from a n55 as well, I wouldn't recommend a 35i x. Get the diesel or the v8, but do your homework on the v8. When I was in the market and way before the care package, every v8 I reviewed had more hoses and engine work under 30k which begs the question how they will be down the road at higher mileage.

The only reason for me wanting to move away from the turbo engine is because there is obviously far less to go wrong with a n/a engine and I might be buying something out of warrenty. I would love an ///M but they are out for the same reason and I know of 2 owners that lost engines because of stuck injectors. I will be looking at 2011-2013 models and might check out the diesel now as well. Last edited by sy2767; 05-10-2015 at 10:50 AM.. |

I'm on my second e70 3.5i and both have been bulletproof. I say you can't go wrong with it. And like others have said if you really need loads of power then the 5.0 or the X5M should be considered.
