X5 Reliability Rating - What are the common issues?

Hi folks,

335 owner here and the wife and I have been thinking about picking up an X5 3.5 as our next car.

How reliable is the X5? Looking online the X5 doesn't seem to rank very well.

What are the common issues that everyone has with this platform?

The last time i was at my dealer I sat in the X5 and the interior materials seems to be more plasticy than other bmw's iv'e own before. Especially for a 60K+ car.

Lastly when is the New X5 due ? 2012?

Thanks!
Alan

As a convert from the 335xi to an '11 X5 35i my chief complaint (which I've had issues with on my 335) is the HPFP.
I've had long cranks several times, and codes related to the long cranks, but I just haven't had the time to take it to the dealer for them to look at. That is my only issue / complaint.

Otherwise I love the interior size, plenty of room for me and the wife, our newborn and 15 year old.

Performance is pretty good (specially if you tune it with the JB3 N55, which reduces the turbo lag you get from the N55). It's not as up and go'ish as the 335 was, but its pretty damn good.

My MPG's are horrible in the city, but that's because of my driving habits, but great on the h-way. Handling is awesome, specially with the adaptive drive system. I plan on getting the SAV lowered, with some H&R sport springs (about a 1" drop all around).

Overall I'm satisfied with my SAV. Whether or not you decide to mod it or not, matters not, you'll be happy with it too.

I have my 2011 since March 28th with no issues or problems at all. The interior is very nice and doesn't feel plasticky to me. Plenty of room for my wife, new born and I and all of his gear.

Have had ours for 1 month, no issues (thank goodness). Scour the forums you will find the typical issues, they seem to be electronics related mostly which is not a shocker.

LOVE the x5, replaced my Honda Ody and I can fit my family: me and my husband, 2 kids (6 & 4) and au pair as well as the occasional visiting grand parents. It's a fun car to drive and I really enjoy all the gadgets.

Forgot to say, 2013 is the year for the x5 refresh so it will be available at this time next year. This may be just me but I don't like the idea of buying a first year model.. Wait for them to work out the kinks.

Alan,

I had an '07 E92 335, traded it for an '09 X6 35, and I'm just moving to a '12 X5 50. I *love* the big X models.

I had a few minor glitches with my X6 (which I didn't have with the 335) but the dealer has always fixed them quickly and easily. For such a big car, the performance is not at all bad with the 35 engine (mine was an N54, the N55 is supposed to be even better!).

The trim is good quality, the interior was actually less rattly than my 335.

If you're buying tho - find a car with comfort seats ("multi-contour seating") and try them. I bought off the lot and was "forced" to have the fancier seats I wouldn't have otherwise paid for, as the sport seats in the 335 were so comfortable. I will never buy a BMW again *without* the comfort seats - they're incredible

I'm only going to the 50i "because I can", honestly. It sounds a little more raw than the 35, but it's got nothing to do with the lack of performance on the 35 engine. I think you'd enjoy an X5

In my opinion the fit and finish our '11 x5 is better than our 08' 335. I don't get the plasticky comment. But to each his own.

Hmmm.....well...

My father is currently on his 2nd X5d and my sister just ditched her 335vert for a X5 3.5 m-sport.

Now, the reason for the 2nd X5d wax that the first burst into flames while they were driving it (35mph on a side road). The 2nd X5d just got flatbedded to the dealership w/what I like to call "rainbow dash", with every error known to man lit up. This is the second time this has occurred - the first being at 500 miles. The well-done X5d had 30k+ miles on it when it met it's fiery demise (BMW JFK parkway fire on YouTube), while their flatbedded one had maybe 5k on it tops.

My sisters 2011 X5 3.5 M-Sport had been problem free since she picked it up in March.

I was really looking forward to ordering a X5d, but now I'm seriously considering a Range Rover.

I've had a 3 series, Range Rover and an X5 and just put an order in for a new X5 50i.

The 3 series was fun, but I wanted more luxury.

The Range Rover was fantastic (I preferred the drive, the Supercharged torque and seating position to all other SUVs) but it broke down ALL THE TIME! (Do not buy a Range Rover for reliability lognut).

The X5 (4.8i) has been utterly sound and possibly the most reliable car I have every owned. I have no squeaks, rattles and it rarely visits the shop for anything other than brakes or oil changes - both covered under warranty. I agree that some of the interior may look plastic (on par with a 3 series), especially with the Nevada leather. If you upgrade to the soft touch Nappa leather seating and dash (as I am doing this time) you will have a very rich interior much like the 6 or 7 series.
