There is light at the end of the tunnel! excuse the pun

I got the below email from PIAA this morning:-

This product is in the manufacturing program and should be with us in August, the part number will be H505 so please do keep an eye on the web site as it will be featured there as soon as it is available from stock.

Yes it will be much brighter than the yellow one fitted as standard, it uses our latest LED technology and has a special resistor in built in the unit so as not trigger the bulb failure system as it will use only mille amps.

Lookin good!

Love the stealth black look.

In your opinion are the new bulbs as bright as the yello OEM you have removed?

Good job !! nice looking car

Couple of questions for you:
1. Was it a "plug and play" installation ?
2. No computer error of any kind after installation?

Please send us the PIAA bulb # or maybe a link to it

if anyone in NY is up for it, pm a member over on 5series.net by the name of brabusw209amg

he's created an HID conversion kit for LCI H8 halogen bulbs for the AE's...they look great on the LCI e60's....i'm sure x6's would be similar but not the same, he'd have to test fit an x6...

It was simple to put them in, hardest part is getting the lid or cover off the back of the headlight as its a little tight under the bonnet/hood, small hands would be an advantage.
Just unscrew the cover then turn the back of the H8 OEM bulb a quarter turn and it just comes out, disconnect the plug, connect the new LED unit, replace the same way the old one came out, tidy u the resistors into the light and replace the lid on the back of the light

Its easy to see the lights line up with the plastic of the Halos as when the light is on you can see the ends of the arms with the LEDs on the ends
I'd say they are just as bright as the OEM units, never used them in the dark as the auto lights take over, I'd prefer them not to be too bright as its a bit too "look at me" attention whore
No errors at all

Got mine from here

Not sure about that one, I have set a reminder to keep checking the site closer to the release date in August. If they don't have it in the US I will get it over in the UK and ship it to you.

Here are some night shots, enjoy.
You can see in the first shot one of the arms positioned over the opening of the main/smaller halo and its two centre LEDs, the larger ring is not lit directly by the light source and thats why some times they can seem dimmer, it comes down to the viewing angle, its just how BMW make them.

I bought the same PIAA kit at http://www.piaaonline.co.uk/category/53/BMW-Upgrades, H499E and to me, they are brighter than stock. The centre ring appears white, but the outer ring has a slight yellow tint to it.

Why do the 2 websites that sell them dont list them as usable for the X6 (E71). They only say for E70 which is the closest match. I'm sure they work for X6 like you say, but don't you think they would mention X6 also if they were for it.

Hi UK6 and others...

I received my upgrade kit from PIAA online and tried to follow the Japanese instructions... anyway, I tried every which way to fit the H499 and although the LED themselves lit and looked pretty bright, when I put them in the smaller halo it only just lit up and not the outer halo at all. When I then compared the standard bulb to the new LED in the daylight, the standard were much brighter.

Am I getting something eliminatory wrong. Any suggestions welcome!?!?!

Make sure the LEDs on the arms are over the opening of the halo, the outer ring will be dimmer as its not lit directly by the bulb, it just gets lit from the inside of the plastic of the halo, just how BM designed it.

I had to use the allen key supplied with the kit to losen the screws and reposition the arms to fit exactly under the opening. Having the halo's on helped as I could see the difference in brightness when maneuvering into position.

It is fairly visable during the day, but still not as bright as that of the 5GT's or the newer 3 Series halos. Excuse the dead flies, was stretching her legs on the motorway to Cornwall.

So this is the first attempt this evening... remarkably dull and not lighting the outer halo.

Thanks for the allen key tip... will try this at half time and hopefully get it sorted!

Will update again.

Ok, lights fitted and it only took the 15 minutes between the half time break. I moved the LED's with the allen key and lined up with the large halo. I have to be honest and say I'm disappointed with the result. The lights don't appear to be particularly bright... judge for yourself and advise further if you can.

I can't see any other way to manipulate the lights in the housing to make them appear brighter!!

They certainly don't look as bright as UK6's.

Thanks for the help anyway.
