funny thing is, this happened to me a month ago. made my car jerk forward at a full stop.
thank God for warranty, but this should be a free fix with or without warranty anyways.

Weird.
Recalls get rolled out slowly via VIN - so your local dealer doesn't get swamped with recall work. Plus BMW needs time to build up its parts inventory for any recall. So the recall letters get staggered. Keep checking your VIN, you will probably get a letter in a few months. Or you can have your dealer run your VIN, even then it might not show right away.

I just paid 1200 euro for this fix. Do I get a refund?

Update: I called the 1-800 recall number on the website. The BMW service rep said I will get a refund but it will be a couple months before this gets into the computers. He recommended I go to my dealership that I had the work done at and ask them to work with BMW HQ to hopefully expedite. My dealership did mention not all of the bolt pieces were found but said they should end up in the oil pan. I am wondering if I need to have the engine taken apart before I end up with a locked-up engine. We get going pretty fast on the Autobahn.

Just called my dealership to see if my vin is on the list and nothing so far. I will probably hear from them in a few months.

I went here - http://www.bmwarchive.org/vin/bmw-vin-decoder.html - entered the last 7 of my vin. Scroll down a bit and you can find the production date.

My E90 had this issue about 2-3 months ago. Luckily it got repaired under warranty. I now however have a F10 535xi, wonder if I'll have to get it fixed on this car.

Bout time lol!! This has been an ongoing and very well known issue!

This is primarily related to N55's, so people who have 328's and such need not worry.

+1 Same here 2010 with n54
Same situation with me. Maybe they are going to add more cars to the list?

Glad my car is still under warranty.

As for people checking their VINs on the BMW website, I think it's still a little too soon. Note at the bottom says it can take up to 30 days after completion of recall for data to be updated, i.e. for your car's info to show up in the system.

I'm just going to wait for the letter in the mail from BMW.

Oh yay I get to have parts replaced on my car...maybe when i go in, maybe I can now make them listen to the damn waste gate rattle on my car and show them how all my exterior trim is either peeling and or turning white.

The problem could have been inconsistent quality from a vendor (BMW is almost uncertainly not the maker of the bolts), an out of tolerance or inconsistent tool that torqued things (those things get checked periodically, but if it is inconsistent, it may take awhile to show), or probably several other issues. BMW sample tests vendor parts, and picks a certain number of cars off the production line for more extensive testing to verify things are okay. They also run EACH vehicle on a dyno at up to 100mph to look for issues (far faster than people in the USA should be driving, anyways!) while monitoring lots of things to look for any issues.

If you ever get a chance to tour one of their factories, you'll find a huge amount of the work is done either by robots or assisted by humans with power tools - this leads to very good consistency in product. You can monitor and qualify a vendor, but they normally only get recertified after awhile, and that is why they do sample testing. You want someone to check each part as it goes into the vehicle, buy something like a Rolls, and that's no guarantee it may not have a recall once in awhile, too.

I worked in the defense industry, and on some jobs, we obviously used microprocessors but we had a requirement that they must operate at far higher temperatures than a typical consumer situation. There's a reason why what you could buy for maybe $100 cost the military $400 - you had to buy and test them and then either throw away maybe as many as 3 out of four because they failed before you found one that worked the way you wanted. For non-critical situations, you'd just buy one off the shelf, but that isn't always a viable option. This is rarely the case with cars...things are only as good as the parts that go in, and everyone is wanting more for less - you set your standards and go from there, fixing issues when something goes wrong.

A news article that came out recently ranked the timeliness of recalls, and BMW sat on top - not in the quantity of recalls, but their timeliness. It did not distinguish between mandatory and voluntary, which would have been interesting.

I entered my vin on the bmw site but it says I don't have any recalls. I learned today on http://www.bmwarchive.org/ that my car actually has an n51 rather than an n52 :/ would that affect my chances of being qualified for a recall?

The car was built in 7/2010 so it fits in the interval
