HUD/iDrive replacement possible?
This is my first post on this forum, and this might be a dumb question... but has anyone changed out their old 2007 iDrive and HUD to a newer system like a 2012 iDrive and HUD? Is it possible... how much wiring would have to be done or would it just be a straight swap using existing cables?
Thanks |

thanks I will give them a shot, but I dont know that it will help the HUD to the new style... I'm talking more about replacing the whole system with second hand parts from a newer X5

That is still a lot of work and a lot of coding is required. Wiring is probably different, etc. You need to talk to a professional that has done the swap. If you have the knowledge it can be done, but since you are here asking questions, this is not a DIY job.

For sure I will have it done professionally, I'm more interested if anyone in the forum has had it done, cost of labor, and so on...Since I live in Poland there is no shortage of the newer HUDs and complete iDrive systems and the prices aren't to bad "$500-$750" since it seems Poland is where all of Europe takes their crashed/damaged cars...

Not many people want to pay the expense and have their car ripped apart. I remeber reading where one member had it done on an E90 and it took around a week and that was with the installer knowing what they are doing. You spends thousands on the parts and then thousands again on the labor.

Just run a tablet install. Cheaper and better. Get one with a data plan or tether to your phone.

Updating to NBT is more involved, mainly because of combox is now incorporated inside NBT, and thus involves bringing cabling from the truck into the cabin. I wouldnt touch the HUD. Newer versions only offer very minor updates quite frankly. |
